Causes of Chronic Inflammation
When it comes to meat, it does not matter how the animal was raised, what it ate, or how happy it was. There are compounds found naturally in animal products that will contribute to chronic inflammation.
1) Neu5Gc (N-Glycolylneuraminic Acid)
Red meat and dairy products often contain a molecule called Neu5Gc. Humans cannot synthesis this molecule. Neu5Gc has been found concentrated in tumors and may contribute to bodywide chronic inflammation.
2) TMAO (Trimethylamine N-oxide)
The bacteria in our gut produce molecue TMAO when we consume animal products such as meat and diary. High levels of TMAO can predict an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death.
Studies have shown that vegetarians and vegan produce less TMAO.
3) AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products)
These are highly reactive harmful compounds found in many foods. Although our body produce them naturally, diet is the biggest contributor. Foods subjected to high temperature cookings include grilling, toasting are high in AGEs. Diets high in meat, poultry, and dairy products are also higher in AGEs.
4) Animal Protein
Diets high in meat can increase gut sensitivity and contribute to intestinal inflammation. On the other hand, plant based sources of protein decrease chronic inflammation. Biomarkers showing inflammation decrease along with overall oxidative stress.
