*Managing Anxious Thoughts: A Workshop for Caregivers*

Supporting others starts with understanding—and calming—your own mind.

Caring for someone with anxiety can stir up your own worries, stress, and self-doubt. This workshop is created especially for caregivers who want to feel more grounded, confident, and equipped.

Join us as we explore:
> Why anxious thoughts arise (in both you and the person you care for)
> CBT & ACT strategies to manage your own anxiety
> Tools to gently support loved ones without absorbing their distress
> Boundary-setting and self-compassion techniques to prevent burnout
> Practical scripts, worksheets, and everyday skills you can use right away

This will be a warm, supportive space where you’ll learn to care for someone else without losing yourself.

🗓️ Date: Saturday, 29th Nov 2025
🕒 Time: 2.30pm (Singapore and Hong Kong), 1.30pm (Cambodia) and 12noon (India)
📍 Location / Online: Zoom
💛 Registration: Email info@capeducate.com

If you’re supporting a child, partner, parent, or friend, this workshop is for you. Let’s help you feel calmer, steadier, and more empowered—one thought at a time.

We’re excited to share an important update: the Centre for Applied Practice in Education is now the Centre for Applied Psychology and Education (although Facebook hasn't caught up yet!).

This change reflects the evolution of our work and the growth of our mission. Over the past few years, we’ve deepened our expertise in disability-focused mental health care, supporting neurodivergent individuals, people with developmental and learning disabilities, and those navigating complex mental health needs.

Our new name honours this expanded commitment. It signals the integration of applied psychology, evidence-based therapeutic approaches, and inclusive educational practice—all to meet the needs of disabled individuals and their families more fully and compassionately.

As disability inclusion and mental health continue to intersect in urgent, real-world ways, we believe it’s vital to strengthen the support systems available. And we’re here to do exactly that.

Thank you for growing with us.

It's difficult to describe Desert Odyssey passages other than that they are healing journeys of the soul, taken simultaneously yet individually by strangers (who become friends) to make sense of well, the sometimes dry, sometimes muddy, sometimes cold and painful realities of the wilderness we call Life.

Passage One "The Way In" explores our interior lives. This is followed by Passage Two "The Way Out - Building Our Relational Life" and Passage Three "The Way Forward - Discovering a Life of Possibilities." It's not easy to be open and vulnerable, because seriously, who wants to be hurt again? But in an empathetic journey taken with fellow Lifers who know the meaning of pain, acceptance and true psychological restoration can take place.

Together with long-time friend and Founder of Desert Odyssey Timothy Khoo, we invite you to join us for a Desert Odyssey Passage One in Ipoh, Malaysia from the 18th to 25th of January 2025. This passage will be particularly suitable for parents or families of individuals with special needs.

Please reach out if you need more information. Spaces are limited as each group is kept very small by intention. See you there :)

"No one can whistle a symphony. It takes an orchestra to play it" (H. E. Luccock).

And what an orchestra of teamwork it was at the Good Start SG Conference last Friday that CAPE Singapore has been a proud co-organiser of since 2022. This year, we welcomed about 1000 participants who benefited from 36 unique break-out sessions, 18 human books and 20 exhibitors. Moreover, from a pool of 69 nominations, 10 children received awards for being "Little Heroes of Inclusion".

A big "thank you" to all co-organisers, especially the hardworking folks at Olive Tree SG. And thank you to our Guest of Honour Lim-Leh for inspiring us with practical and creative ideas for collaborating with each other, community partners and stakeholders, as well as our Keynote Speaker Joosa (PhD) for telling us to find small but ingenious ways of connecting with ourselves and the children we love.

We will be providing "Theory of Mind for ASD Children" online in October, in response to multiple requests to provide a remote option to access the valuable teaching ideas encapsulated in the course.

It's a 2-part workshop suitable for parents, teachers and therapists seeking to develop the social cognitive aspects of their child's development. Dr Denise Lai Chua will review multiple means of getting to the essence of what it means to have a Theory of Mind, including emotional understanding, true and false beliefs, as well as the kind of language needed to make sense of mental states.

Sign up and earn 5 CEUs (or CPD hours) recognised by the International Behavior Analysis Organisation.

19th and 26th October (both Saturdays), from 1.30pm to 4pm (GMT +8).

See you then!

The ability to hold on to a false belief stems from the brain's capacity to understand that each of us has a different "mind" and that each of our minds can be a little different. In other words, we are able to, and indeed do often believe different things, doubt facts, query truths, imagine possibilities, know something for certain, and wonder at well, the wonder of many things.

In this short animation, we worked with the incredibly hardworking Caleb Chan to illustrate the classic Sally-Anne Test by Daniel Dennett. We are hoping to incorporate this and many other similar animations into a "Theory of Mind" learning app for children with additional needs.

Are you an app developer? We'd love to hear from you.

Are you a teacher looking at ways to engage your students using the power of animation? Caleb Chan is the expert creator for you :)

Are you a parent? We'd love for any feedback that you may have about this clip and the other animation prototypes that we currently have on CAPE's YouTube channel.

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul - and sings the tunes without the words - and never stops at all." (Emily Dickinson)

Dr Denise: It was lovely catching up with friends and former colleagues in Hong Kong a few weeks ago. A big "thank you" to those who attended my two-day workshop on "A Theory of Mind for ASD Children", as well as the faculty and staff of YCCECE Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education 耀中幼教學院 for welcoming me back to speak on the topics of "Mental Health for Early Childhood Educators" and "Inclusive Preschool Practices".

Grateful thanks are also due to Sabrina Ho, Yvonne Becher, Abigail Tannis and all Exco members of The Child Development Centre for including me in their annual dinner. It was a night to remember, re-establishing old ties amidst camaraderie and a shared passion for serving special children in the city. Congratulations to staff members who received their long-term service awards, thoroughly well-deserved!

Onwards we march, Hong Kong! To a future filled with hope for all ❤️

Have you ever wondered how to equip children on the autism spectrum with a Theory of Mind? Wonder no more. We'll be running our highly successful "ToM for ASD children" workshops in Hong Kong on the 27th and 28th of August 2024. Attend both sessions for 6 CEU/CPD hours, validated by the International Behavior Analyst Organisation (IBAO). In April 2023, CNA reported that 1 in 10 teenagers in Singapore suffer from a mental health disorder, and that parents need to develop a higher level of mental health literacy to support their children. Mental health literacy however, begins with understanding the other in an empathic and non-judgmental way. At CAPE, we use the Birkman Method to help teenagers (17 years and above) and their families attain deeper levels of understanding about each other so that life and relationships may be navigated more carefully; where coping and communication become more effective, and confidence, resilience and self-esteem are achieved. Reach out today if you are a parent of a teen or if you love and care for a teen. We'd be happy to tell you more.

Our Story

At CAPE, we believe in our teacher superheroes, and we want to see each and every one of them succeed in their respective job roles and functions.

You could be an aspiring teacher or one with many years of experience under your superhero belt. You might even be a leader of teachers, a college professor, a home tutor, a shadow teacher, a special education assistant or an early intervention therapist.

Whatever you do in the education domain, CAPE exists with your needs in mind.

Founded in 2019 and currently headquartered in Hong Kong with a network spanning Singapore, Indonesia, India and Cambodia, alongside pedagogical experts and associates from Finland and all over the world, CAPE endeavours to keep teachers engaged and energised in their job-roles so that they can be continual agents of social change and transformation in their respective contexts.
