An a**l fistula is an abnormal tract that forms between the a**l gland to the skin around the a**s, often the result of a previous a**l abscess that failed to heal properly.

Most a**l fistulas rarely heal on their own and surgery is usually required to prevent further complications, such as recurrent infections that can cause persistent discomfort, swelling and discharge of pus or blood.

The type of surgery depends on the location and complexity of the fistula. The most common approaches are a fistulotomy and LIFT procedure.
