I’ll get to the last coupla weeks with Lagwagon, Frenzal & Cell Block soon, but was stoked to be part of APRA’s first Regional Session for the year, and even more happy that it was 15 minutes from my house.

ft. Legends talking about making music, traversing the music industry and playing music, to an audience of ages from high school to heaps older, people playing in their bedrooms and people with viral instagram posts (at least until the govt shut them down for being under 16). As you can see in some of these photos, I looked heaps like I knew what I was talking about, so hopefully they believed I did. I also got heaps out of chatting to everyone, and it was an honour to hear Iris from Djinama Yilaga tell their story in one of my workshops.

Cheers to Alice for asking all excellent questions and dealing with my pre-show vent (unrelated), and to Kristen, Nikki & all at APRA for coming down to Djiringanj Country!

If they’re near you, go along! There’s heaps to learn and heaps for us to learn from you.

Photos by except the dodgy ones at the end.

LOVE SONG DEDICATIONS AT THE STEAMPACKET

Lovers, let’s sing!

Soppy, saucy, romantic or just ridiculous, this Saturday I’m bringing my guitar and a quiver-full of songs up to Nelligen for your Valentines, Galentines or Palentines party.

Request “your” song, or a tune that takes you both back to that special time or place. Or heck, even a break-up anthem. I’ll do my best to play it and you can help me sing it to your beloved/s.

Or just come for dinner and drinks and I’ll serenade you and your schnitzel with my favourite love songs. Which may well not be yours.

5pm Saturday Feb 14 at the Steampacket Hotel Nelligen

See you there, lovers!

Lindsay McDougall is a guitarist and singer/songwriter who since 1996 has been playing guitar and writing songs (and even sometimes singing) in Frenzal Rhomb. Lindsay also plays guitar AND keytar in the world’s greatest 80s band Cell Block 69, and sometimes gets to play with Briggs, Imogen Clark, Lagwagon, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes and even the occasional Wiggle or Wiggle-adjacent band. So basically if you request any song, he’ll probably know it. You might have to help him sing it though.

I’ve been away from home for far too long but luckily there’s been great people and animals and festivals and bike trips and food. And only got poisoned by cashews and had to throw up violently before soundcheck once (not pictured). Three lagwagon shows and a cell block left and then I get to see Jen and the horses and chickens again. See you soon!

James Valentine officially retired from radio today. He’s been an absent friend to listeners for a while now, dealing with dumb health stuff for a couple of years and says “I need to focus on getting better and being with family and friends and making sure I’m giving my health my best shot.”

I’ve loved him on radio for years and we even got him to kick the triple j studio door down and do some live Sax education back in the Jay and the Doctor days.

It’s always a risk letting us muso types into proper adult jobs like radio, I am a case in point, but ever since he popped up in between shows on tv in the 90s James has been one of my favourites. His radio show, on just before mine, is a masterclass in cool and hilarious communication, perfect collaboration with the audience, and making it all look and sound really easy (although his producers may have a different take on that last bit).

I do hope I get to hear his calmly cutting comments and an elongated “ummmm” on the radio again.

A few years ago he was touring a live show around the state. It was basically his radio show - lots of audience participation and hilarity, but he also got to show off his sax chops like the model jazzman he is. I’d just started on adult radio in Wollongong and he asked me to help out, so I cobbled together all my Illawarra knowledge into this appropriation of one of his 80s contemporaries, and got James to do the sax solo. He played several more notes than the original.

Get well please James, I’d like to discuss “sax offences” on the radio again thanks. xoxoxooox

Very excited to bring this ridiculous show in all its Corey glory to the Oxford Art Arena next Saturday Feb 7!

As usual, only Sydney show this year, and as usual, the final show ever.

I WANT MY CELL BLOCK 69!

Tix in bio. Riffs in order. See you there!

Cheers to Sam Fox for the photos and for having the perfect 80s name without even having to change hers.

Just kicked off my third rodeo with Lagwagon. Had a ball pulling a double shift at The Froth & The Fury in Perth, Newcastle tonight with Dal’s band, Sydney and then Wollongong this week with Jason’s other band, more double shifts at The Froth and The Furious in Adelaide next Saturday and plenty more after that.

See you there! I’ll be the one frothing while furiously studying the chord charts. And probably making more tour posters.

I haven’t been in Gadigal/Sydney for Survival Day for a few years. Was so good to be back at Yabun!

Also the Invasion Day rally and march was bigger than ever.

And shout out to the legends I ran into. I didn’t take photos with all of them but I promise I’ve got lots of friends just out of frame.

12 hours in the middle of the continent, for once not being the silliest band on the bill.

Ft. breathtaking vistas, iconic sunsets, metal meets aerial hoop meets some bloke taped up there with a 9 string guitar, and a burning pipe organ. Thanks !
