It’s Daniel Southern’s birthday! (Almost. It’s tomorrow. Actually by the time I finish writing this it’ll probably be his birthday now so please disregard). He put together a cool band to play at his party last weekend and I played this song at it. But I think this version captures the essence better. And also no one filmed the live version. It’s confusing because it was my birthday this week and Daniel did a song for me, based on this song, which you hadn’t heard yet. Unless you were at the party. Also there was the original one by Elton John but I don’t think that one was about the same Daniel.

Thanks to Jen for helping with the camera framing and Sammy, Mate, Leftie & Pokie for tolerating it all.

Food’s up!*

The Dinner Mix is Double J’s new weekly guest curated mixtape.
An hour of music, handpicked by artists and trusted music lovers, every Thursday at 6pm.

Each week, you’ll get a new mix shaped by your favourite artists and trusted music mates. It’s personal, thoughtfully put together and selected around flow and feel, not algorithms.

This week, Frenzal Rhomb guitarist and broadcaster Lindsay McDougall curates a wide ranging mix that jumps between baggy grooves from Happy Mondays and Primal Scream, fierce rock from Hole and Camp Cope, and a dose of chaos from Doug Anthony Allstars and TISM.

Join Lindsay for a few marvellous musical morsels for your mind.

Thursday from 6pm

Encore Sundays at 5pm

Listen back any time on ABC Listen.

*Music is food on . Bellies are empty but ears are cheering.

⚡ LEGENDS FROM FRENZAL RHOMB

Featuring all the hits and several memories from Frenzal Rhomb and associated sonic explorations, this will be an intimate and respectable acoustic performance, or maybe they’ll just play their songs but slower and quieter, and tell stories while Jay works out where to put the capo.

I clearly ate far too much cola-flavoured Sour Strap at Bega Show last night but regardless, Demolition Derby is now my favourite thing.

GIMME STEAM!

The Valentine’s Day gig was very fun, and I’m back in Nelligen next Friday March 6 for another three hours of songs, nonsense, and trying to work out the songs you request on the spot!

Went great last time and I’ve come armed with a couple I couldn’t get that night. Serves me right for not practising them on a horse. Cheers for the Miley, Swayze, Buzzcocks, Bon Jovi and more. It was a veritable buffet of requests.

So come along have a drink, a sing, and a guitar (air or otherwise).

See you at the Steampacket Hotel Nelligen, 5-8pm Friday March 6

I’ll get to the last coupla weeks with Lagwagon, Frenzal & Cell Block soon, but was stoked to be part of APRA’s first Regional Session for the year, and even more happy that it was 15 minutes from my house.

ft. Legends talking about making music, traversing the music industry and playing music, to an audience of ages from high school to heaps older, people playing in their bedrooms and people with viral instagram posts (at least until the govt shut them down for being under 16). As you can see in some of these photos, I looked heaps like I knew what I was talking about, so hopefully they believed I did. I also got heaps out of chatting to everyone, and it was an honour to hear Iris from Djinama Yilaga tell their story in one of my workshops.

Cheers to Alice for asking all excellent questions and dealing with my pre-show vent (unrelated), and to Kristen, Nikki & all at APRA for coming down to Djiringanj Country!

If they’re near you, go along! There’s heaps to learn and heaps for us to learn from you.

Photos by except the dodgy ones at the end.

LOVE SONG DEDICATIONS AT THE STEAMPACKET

Lovers, let’s sing!

Soppy, saucy, romantic or just ridiculous, this Saturday I’m bringing my guitar and a quiver-full of songs up to Nelligen for your Valentines, Galentines or Palentines party.

Request “your” song, or a tune that takes you both back to that special time or place. Or heck, even a break-up anthem. I’ll do my best to play it and you can help me sing it to your beloved/s.

Or just come for dinner and drinks and I’ll serenade you and your schnitzel with my favourite love songs. Which may well not be yours.

5pm Saturday Feb 14 at the Steampacket Hotel Nelligen

See you there, lovers!

Lindsay McDougall is a guitarist and singer/songwriter who since 1996 has been playing guitar and writing songs (and even sometimes singing) in Frenzal Rhomb. Lindsay also plays guitar AND keytar in the world’s greatest 80s band Cell Block 69, and sometimes gets to play with Briggs, Imogen Clark, Lagwagon, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes and even the occasional Wiggle or Wiggle-adjacent band. So basically if you request any song, he’ll probably know it. You might have to help him sing it though.

12 hours in the middle of the continent, for once not being the silliest band on the bill.

Ft. breathtaking vistas, iconic sunsets, metal meets aerial hoop meets some bloke taped up there with a 9 string guitar, and a burning pipe organ. Thanks !
