Luis Gorjão Henriques, founder of Vale do Criz kennels, is a highly respected figure in the dog world with an extensive international judging career. As former President of the FCI Breeding Commission and Vice-President of the Portuguese Kennel Club, he has played a key role in shaping modern dog breeding.

Join us on 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝟴𝗣𝗠 𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗧 on Talking dogs with Ante to hear his story.

After all the Crufts excitement we are now ready to continue with our weekly interviews and this Wednesday my guest will be Luis Gorjão Henriques of Vale do Criz fame from Portugal.
“Vale do Criz” kennels were established in 1982, although the first dog show for Luis was in 1979. He is the owner/breeder of Champions in Boxers, Small Portuguese Podengos Smooth-haired, Portuguese Pointers, Fox-Terriers (both coat varieties), Parson Russell and Jack Russell Terriers with 458 titles achieved at this moment with dogs either bred or owned by Luis, including several World and European Winners.
Luis became a judge in 1993 and he is an all breeds judge since 2021 and has judged some of the most important shows all around the world.
During the years Luis was involved in many different Clubs and held many important positions including the one of the President of the FCI’s Breeding Commission and Vice-president of the Portuguese Kennel Club. He is also the Secretary of the International Terrier Association Interra.

𝗟𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 is a neonatal genetic disease in Airedale Terrier associated with a mutation in LEMP3 gene. Affected puppies show interstitial lung disease due to abnormal surfactant biogenesis leading to lethal hypoxic respiratory distress and failure. 🫁
The clinical symptoms appear early in life, usually within the first few weeks of a puppy's life. Affected puppies show signs of rapid or shallow breathing, lethargy, pneumonia as well as other pneumonial disorders. 😣

Ever noticed that most orange cats are male? 🤔 That’s genetics. 🧬
The gene for orange fur is located on the X chromosome. Male cats (XY) need just one X with the orange gene to be orange. Female cats (XX) need the gene on both X chromosomes to be fully orange, which is less common. If they carry it on only one X, they usually appear tortoiseshell or calico.
Simple, right? Genetics doesn’t just shape coat colour. It tells a much deeper story about every animal. 🐈
