February 28 is Rare Disease Day. Worldwide, there are more than 7,000 known rare diseases, affecting about 300 million people in total. In Europe, a disease is considered rare if it affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people.

Diagnosing a rare disease is challenging. It often takes years before patients receive the correct diagnosis. Research into recognition and treatment is expensive, and moreover, only about 5% of rare diseases have an approved medicine that can slow down the symptoms.
