🕊️ Ahead of "NATIONAL REMEMBRANCE DAY" – 18TH JANUARY 2026 🕊️
Remembering the Past. Promoting Peace. Building the Future.
As a way of complementing the Government of Sierra Leone’s efforts, ARMeD Victims SL encourages schools and universities to prioritize National Remembrance Day (18th January) and the remembrance week that follows.
We call on educational institutions to take part in the following meaningful ways:
🤍 Wear White / White Ribbon
Encourage pupils, students, teachers, and staff to wear white throughout the week or display a white ribbon. White symbolizes peace, remembrance, and non-violence, reminding us all of our shared responsibility to promote unity and lasting peace in Sierra Leone.
📘 Share the Child-Friendly TRC Report
Use the child-friendly version of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Report to help learners understand the civil war, its impact on children and communities, and the importance of truth, justice, and reconciliation.
🗣️ Host Talks & Peace Discussions
Organize school assemblies, talks, or panel discussions on peace building, national unity, and lessons from our past. Invite educators, survivors, peace advocates, or community leaders to inspire meaningful dialogue.
💬 Organize Debates & Reflection Sessions
Encourage debates and guided reflections on peace, justice, human rights, and national healing. These sessions help young people think critically and appreciate diverse perspectives.
🧱 Set Up Remembrance Walls
Create spaces where students and staff can write messages of peace, hope, and remembrance for victims of the civil war—honoring the past while committing to a peaceful future.
🎥🏛️ Screen Films or Visit Museums
Show educational films or documentaries on Sierra Leone’s history or organize visits to museums and memorial sites to deepen understanding through lived experiences.
🕯️ Together, let us remember, reflect, and recommit to peace.
A peaceful Sierra Leone begins with informed and compassionate young people.
