Marie Stopes Sierra Leone

Marie Stopes Sierra Leone Marie Stopes Sierra Leone is the leading women's wellness provider and the country's most experienced

Marie Stopes Sierra Leone started providing services in 1986 and is one of the oldest programmes in the Marie Stopes International partnership. We have a long and proud history in the country and are known locally as “de mammy fo welbodi” or “the mother of health”. The programme continued to work through both the decade long civil war (the only NGO to do so) and the 2015 Ebola outbreak. The country continues to face many challenges: life expectancy is just 45 and the country has one of the world’s highest rates of maternal mortality. Marie Stopes Sierra Leone is the country’s largest family planning organisation, with teams working in every one of the country’s 14 districts and providing more than half of all contraception. Despite all of the progress in the country, just 21% of women aged 15-49 are using a method of modern contraception.

In Sierra Leone, there are roughly 81,000 people living with HIV today. That means in a room of 1,000 people, about 17 may be living with HIV.

Yet alarmingly, over 22,000 of these individuals are not yet on life-saving treatment.

HIV might not be visible, but that does not make it less real or less dangerous. These numbers remind us that HIV remains a serious threat.

If you do not have HIV, protect yourself every single time.

Use condoms. Use them correctly. Use our Flame Condoms. Do not assume you are safe because you know your partner. HIV does not choose based on love or loyalty. It strikes when risks are ignored.

But for those living with HIV, this is not the end of the story. With testing, care, treatment, and support, people can continue to live full and productive lives.

Marie Stopes stands with all individuals and communities affected by HIV. There is dignity in every life. There is value in every future.

On this World AIDS Day, let us choose protection, choose safety, and choose to take responsibility for our health.

HIV is real. AIDS is deadly. But, with compassion, prevention, and access to health services, we can reduce new infections and save lives.
