In May we celebrate the International Days of the Midwives and Nurses.
MCH nurses and Midwives are working non-stop to provide quality care to patients and supporting mothers to safely deliver their babies during these tough times.
COVID 19 outbreak in Sierra Leone has badly affected the health sector. Expectant families are reluctant to seek proffesionnal care provided by the ANC and Maternity departments.

MCH Nurses and Midwives would like to assure their patients that they are implementing the infection prevention and control measurments, wearing their protective gear in delivery rooms and clinic. They continue to support Magbenteh community and the catchment areas.

Jonathan Marrah (pictured furthest to the right), is a nurse at the Magbenteh Community Hospital. Jonathan is also a tailor. He supported the hospital by sewing 200 masks for his colleagues out of gara, cotton and africana, 2 for each staff member. Staff members are applied with regular mask at work, but cannot take those masks home. Health care workers play a vital role in this pandemic, and therefore cannot stay at home and isolate. The masks are for the staff’s personal usage, for example, when going to work in public transport or buying food at the market.

We at SSLDF are incredibly proud of all the staff members and their take on the challenges we’re facing. Even though it’s not an easy time, Jonathan’s work shows what a great team we have and how they’re always looking for ways to be creative and helpful in times of need.

Today, on May 1st, is International Labour Day, a day celebrated all over the world where we honour the working class and labourers across the globe. On this day, rallies and marches are held to create awareness about issues the working class often faces, like minimum wage laws and forced labour.

SSLDF wants to celebrate all their hard workers, but especially their carpenters, maintenance and construction workers that are now working on refurbishing the operating room. Due to a lockdown in Sierra Leone next week, the work can’t stop, even on Labour Day, and we are incredibly thankful for their hard work and devotion.

To fight against the negative effect that the epidemic can have on the development and performance of school children due to lack of food, the Magbenteh Community Boarding School wants to send a bag of rice to each of the 240 students and complete Thus, the feeding program started last January.

Given the existence of part of the resources necessary to purchase these bags, this project faces the challenge of raising the money needed to buy 40 bags of rice of 50 kg at a price of € 30 per bag, and thus be able to guarantee the livelihood of the children who attend school and their families for approximately the next 45 days, until the end of the school term.

We need your help; Thank you for your collaboration!

World Malaria Day is celebrated on April 25th by the World Health Organization to End Malaria in promoting “Zero Malaria starts with me.” The campaign aims to keep Malaria high on the political agenda, mobilize additional resources, and empower communities to take ownership of malaria prevention and care.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease, typically found in tropical and subtropical climates, Sierra Leone included. Malaria is especially dangerous for children because their immunity is low. Within a few days, a perfectly healthy child can collapse with a raging fever and develop severe complications, such as convulsions or anemia. In 2018, the under-5 mortality rate for Sierra Leone was 108.31 deaths per thousand live births. That ranks Sierra Leone as the 4th worst country in the world on the list of the world bank, and Malaria is considered one of the main reasons for death among children under 5 years old.

In 2019, MCH treated over 2558 patients with Malaria, half of which are children under-5. Although the treatment is for free, parents often wait until symptoms are severe before seeking professional help, which sometimes can lead to death. In those cases, MCH lost 17 children due to Malaria. The first years of life are very challenging for parents in Sierra Leone. Still, MCH staff always urges the parents to work on the prevention of Malaria, such as using mosquito nets over the baby beds, spraying pesticides and keeping the household environment clean. All deemed necessary to help prevent such disease. However, sometimes these measures are not even applied.

An innovation in a time of crisis. As we all know, hand washing is one of the critical preventions against Covid-19. This hand-washing station is designed, assembled and donated by a local private company to public medical facilities. It’s also available to be purchased by the citizens at local markets. The times we are living in right now are tough, but it’s wonderful to see people coming together and see all the fantastic things they are making. Please remember to stay safe and stay at home!

We are proud to present our cleaners at MCH in their new cleaning and protective gears. One of the most important things during the global pandemic that’s happening right now is good sanitation and hygiene. At Magbenteh Community Hospital, every role is vital, and will our cleaners, as always, make sure that the hospital is a clean and safe space for everyone.
