World Water Day 2026

In Nugal, Puntland, women and girls spend hours fetching water and caring for family members sick from unsafe sanitation and are often left out of decisions that shape their communities.

Saytun Isse, SBCC Officer on PSI-SOM’s GiveWell WASH Project, works with students in the classroom and brings community voices from teachers to elders into discussions that shape practical solutions.

" I’m proud to be part of this work" she says. “Every day, I meet women and girls carrying the burden of unsafe water and sanitation. Changing practices at household level is what improves health and that’s what drives me.”

These conversations spanning classrooms and community halls are changing who decides how water, sanitation, and hygiene are managed , putting women and girls at the center, in line with World Water Day 2026’s Water and Gender theme

Three hours by boat from Bosaso lies Buruc Island.
No roads. No nearby clinic.
When a child falls sick or a mother goes into labor, families often have only one option: a risky trip across the sea.

In these communities, female health workers are changing what access to care looks like. Trained and supported through programs implemented by Population Services International in collaboration with government health authorities, they bring essential care directly to households.

This short documentary follows one of them.

The Ministry of Health Development of Somaliland, in partnership with Population Services International has provided modern smartphones to 25 private health facilities to strengthen real time health data reporting.

Private clinics are often the first point of care for thousands of patients each month. Until now, much of their reporting has been delayed or fragmented. These devices will enable faster submission of accurate data into the national health information system, improving visibility, planning, and response.

Stronger data means better resource allocation, improved monitoring, and more accountable service delivery across the health sector.

This initiative reflects continued collaboration between the Ministry and PSI to integrate private providers into national systems and advance digital health transformation across Somaliland.

Somaliland’s Ministry of Health Development, in collaboration with PSI as a technical partner, launched a four day training in Hargeisa earlier this week to strengthen the collection and use of health data, with a clear focus on child spacing services and their role in improving maternal and child health outcomes.

Staff from 25 private health facilities across the capital are taking part. The opening brought together ministry leads from hospitals and health services, regional coordination, and the national health information system, alongside PSI, to deepen coordination with private providers, particularly on standardizing reporting and strengthening the flow of patient data.

The training is expected to support more consistent data use across facilities and contribute to better quality planning and service delivery for families.

Strengthening health data in the private sector

The Puntland Ministry of Health, with support from PSI, has launched a five-day training to strengthen Health Information Management Systems across private health facilities in Garowe.

The training helps private providers improve how health data is collected, managed, and reported addressing gaps that affect service quality, planning, and accountability within the health system.
By aligning facilities with Ministry standards, the initiative ensures health information from the private sector feeds into Puntland’s wider health system for evidence-based decision-making.

This initiative is part of ongoing collaboration between the Ministry and partners, with PSI providing technical support to strengthen health systems and improve healthcare delivery across Puntland.
