🌍 Successful Completion of WASH Program Phase Two – MOOC3 Field Visit (Module Three) 🌍

📍 Location: Sayidaka Community, Mogadishu, Somalia

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the WASH Program Phase Two – MOOC3 Field Visit for Module Three, titled “Municipal Solid Waste Management in Developing Countries,” organized by the Faculty of Health Sciences and Tropical Medicine in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag).

A total of 126 students are enrolled in the MOOC3 program, and 53 students actively participated in this hands-on field activity aimed at strengthening their understanding of community-based waste management systems and practices.

During the visit, students:
1. Conducted community assessments on household waste management and disposal practices.
2. Engaged with local residents to learn about their waste handling methods and related environmental challenges.
3. Identified gaps and proposed feasible, sustainable solutions for improving municipal solid waste management.
4. Reflected on the connection between theoretical knowledge and field application.

This field visit offered valuable practical experience and emphasized the importance of community participation in achieving sustainable and effective solid waste management in urban settings.

We sincerely thank all participating students, faculty coordinators, and community members for their collaboration and contribution to this successful learning experience.

📘 Strengthening Collaboration in Health Sciences and Tropical Medicine 🌿.

Today, the Faculty of Health Sciences and Tropical Medicine had the honor of hosting a productive meeting with Rector Dr. Prof. Mohamed Mohamud. The session focused on advancing academic collaboration, improving program quality, and enhancing research capacity within the health sciences field.

During the meeting, the Dean of the Faculty presented a comprehensive overview of the faculty’s current academic programs, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The presentation highlighted key areas such as:

✅ Ongoing initiatives to improve teaching and learning quality
✅ Research opportunities in public health and tropical medicine
✅ Strategic partnerships with local and international institutions
✅ Challenges faced by the faculty and potential solutions
✅ Plans for expanding postgraduate training and professional development

Today, Monday, 27th October 2025, we conducted an insightful session focused on the importance of implementing HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) in the modern food industry.

From farm to fork, every stage of food production plays a vital role in ensuring that what reaches consumers is safe, high-quality, and free from contamination. Participants explored real-world applications, safety standards, and practical strategies to build a strong food safety culture.

💡 This session highlighted how collaboration between industry professionals, regulators, and producers is key to maintaining public health and consumer confidence.

📅 Dates: 16 & 22 October 2025
📍 Location: Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Settlements, Dayniile District

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the WASH Program Phase Two – MOOC2 Field Visit for Module Two, organized by the Faculty of Health Sciences and Tropical Medicine in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag).

A total of 95 students participated in this two-day field activity, gaining hands-on experience and practical exposure to real-world WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) challenges faced by communities living in IDP settlements.

During the visit, students:
1. Conducted on-site assessments of sanitation and waste management practices.
2. Engaged with community members to understand hygiene behaviors and access to safe water.
3. Identified challenges and proposed feasible, sustainable WASH solutions.
4. Reflected on the link between theory and practice in addressing sanitation and hygiene issues.

This field visit was a vital component of Module Two of the MOOC2 course, helping students bridge classroom learning with field realities. It highlighted the importance of participatory learning and community engagement in achieving effective and sustainable WASH outcomes.

Public Health Specialist – Reproductive and Child Health & Health Research

The Faculty of Health Sciences and Tropical Medicine successfully conducted a one-day training titled “Introduction to Research and Literature Review” for senior Public Health students.

The session aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of fundamental research concepts and enhance their skills in conducting literature reviews. The training covered essential topics such as:

Meaning, importance, and characteristics of research

Types, motivation, and ethical considerations in research

Understanding research variables and levels of measurement

Conducting a literature review using primary and secondary sources

The training combined lectures, discussions, and practical exercises to ensure active participation and hands-on learning. Students demonstrated great interest and engagement throughout the session.

This capacity-building initiative was organized by the Office of Internship at the Faculty of Health Sciences and Tropical Medicine, as part of its continuous efforts to promote research excellence and prepare future public health professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to address health challenges in Somalia.
