Mass Displacement in Wau County Due to Deteriorating Security Situation
Wau South Payam, within Wau Municipality, witnessed a large-scale displacement on Saturday, as a significant number of residents—most of them farmers—were forced to flee their homes due to worsening insecurity and escalating violence.
The affected areas include Biringi, Ngolimbo, Natabo, Five Mile, and several bomas under Bagari Payam. According to testimonies from internally displaced persons (IDPs), the violence is reportedly linked to suspected cattle herders, with recent days marked by repeated attacks and looting, creating widespread fear and instability among communities.
On Palm Sunday, Wau South Payam received a large influx of displaced people, who reported that the surge in violence over the past two days resulted in deaths and the disappearance of several individuals, some of whom remain unaccounted for.
The Sultan of Biringi, Paul Saraf Ufo, expressed deep concern over the suffering of the affected population, highlighting the growing fear and lack of stability caused by ongoing attacks and looting. He emphasized that the displaced communities are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, particularly with the approaching rainy season, which poses additional health risks.
It is worth noting that the majority of those displaced are among the most vulnerable groups, including children, women, and the elderly.
As of the time of this report, no official statement has been issued by the county or state authorities regarding these incidents.
