🌸 International Women’s Day – Recognizing Women in Home-Based Care
(Commemorated 08 March)

International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements, strength, and resilience of women worldwide. In many communities, women play a central role in caregiving, supporting families, and promoting health within the household.

Home-Based Care programs often rely heavily on women who dedicate their time and compassion to caring for the sick, elderly, and vulnerable. While women provide essential care to others, it is equally important to encourage them to prioritize their own health and well-being.

Caregivers can promote women’s health by encouraging regular health check-ups, maternal care, family planning services, and mental health support. Education about nutrition, reproductive health, and prevention of diseases such as cervical and breast cancer is also vital.

Empowering women with knowledge, support, and access to healthcare strengthens families and improves community health.

🍎 World Obesity Day – Promoting Healthy Lifestyles in the Home
(Commemorated 04 March)

World Obesity Day raises awareness about the growing global challenge of overweight and obesity. Obesity increases the risk of many chronic conditions including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Home-Based Care programs play a key role in encouraging healthy lifestyles within families and communities. Caregivers can educate households about the importance of balanced nutrition, portion control, and regular physical activity. Even simple activities such as walking, gardening, or household chores can help improve physical health.

Caregivers can also support individuals living with chronic diseases by monitoring weight, encouraging adherence to treatment plans, and promoting healthy meal preparation using locally available foods. Reducing excessive salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats can significantly improve health outcomes.

By promoting healthy habits at home, communities can prevent many lifestyle-related diseases and improve the quality of life for those receiving care.

👂 World Hearing Day – Promoting Ear and Hearing Care at Home
(Commemorated 03 March)
World Hearing Day reminds us that hearing health is an important part of overall well-being. Hearing loss can affect people of all ages and may lead to communication difficulties, social isolation, and reduced quality of life. Many cases of hearing loss can be prevented or managed when detected early.

Home-Based Care (HBC) caregivers play an important role in identifying and supporting people with hearing difficulties in the community. Caregivers can observe signs such as difficulty hearing conversations, frequently asking others to repeat themselves, or increasing the volume of radios and televisions.

Caregivers can support hearing health by encouraging safe ear care practices, avoiding inserting objects into the ear, and promoting early medical consultation when hearing problems occur. They can also help families communicate better with individuals who have hearing challenges by speaking clearly, facing the person when talking, and reducing background noise.

Protecting hearing is essential for maintaining social connection, independence, and dignity for individuals receiving care at home.

🔴 The Silent Killer: What You Need to Know About Hypertension 🔴

Did you know that 1 in 3 adults has high blood pressure, but many don't even know it? 🩺

Hypertension is often called the "Silent Killer" because it rarely shows symptoms until it’s too late. The Heart Truth emphasizes that knowing your numbers is the first step to protection.

📊 Understand Your Numbers
A reading of 130/80 mm Hg or higher is generally considered hypertension.

Systolic (Top): Pressure when your heart beats.
Diastolic (Bottom): Pressure when your heart rests.

⚠️ Why It Matters
Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to serious complications over time, including:
💔 Heart Attack or Stroke
🧠 Dementia or Memory Issues
🩸 Kidney Damage
👁️ Vision Loss
✅ 5 Simple Steps to Take Control
Reduce the Salt: Aim for less than 2,300mg of sodium daily.
Move More: Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity each week.
Eat Heart-Healthy: Focus on fruits, veggies, and whole grains.
Manage Stress: Try meditation, deep breathing, or yoga.
Monitor at Home: Learn how to track your readings accurately.

STOP! 🛑 Before you massage that red spot...
Many people think massaging a red area on the hip or heel helps blood flow. Actually, it can cause deep tissue damage!
If you’re caring for someone with limited mobility, remember:
✅ DO use specialized foam or air cushions.
❌ DON'T use "donut" rings—they cut off circulation.
✅ DO keep skin clean and dry.
Stay proactive to stay healthy. 💙

🚨Found a red spot or an open sore?🚨

🛑 Don’t wait. Pressure ulcers can escalate quickly, but taking the right steps now can stop the damage.
Here is your Immediate Action Plan:
1️⃣ Remove the Pressure (Priority #1)
The most important thing you can do is get off the spot.
Reposition immediately: If it’s on the tailbone, roll to the side. If it’s on a heel, "float" it off the bed using a pillow under the calf.
Set a timer: Move every 2 hours in bed or every 15 minutes in a chair.
2️⃣ Clean & Protect
Gentle Cleanse: Wash Stage 1 (red) skin with mild soap and pat dry. Never rub or massage the area—it can tear the underlying tissue!
Saline for Open Sores: If the skin is broken, use a saline solution. Avoid harsh chemicals like hydrogen peroxide.
Barrier Cream: Apply a moisture barrier (like zinc oxide) to protect the surrounding skin from sweat or irritation.
3️⃣ Check Your Gear
Ditch the "Donut": Ring-shaped cushions actually cut off blood flow to the center. Use high-density foam or air cushions instead.
Check Linens: Ensure sheets are dry and wrinkle-free. Even a small fold in a sheet can act like a knife against fragile skin.
4️⃣ Fuel the Repair
Your body needs extra "bricks" to rebuild skin:
Protein Power: Increase protein intake (chicken, beans, Greek yogurt).
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to keep skin elastic.
🚩 When to call the Pro's:
Call 7620 0200 / 7920 0200/ 7850 0500 📞 immediately if you see:
Pus or foul-smelling drainage. Fever or chills (this could mean the infection is spreading).
Increased swelling or heat around the wound.
No improvement after 48 hours of total pressure relief.

🚨 Pressure Ulcers: HELP 🚨

Protecting your skin (and your loved ones!) starts with knowing the facts about Pressure Ulcers (also known as bedsores). These injuries aren't just surface-level; they can happen in as little as two hours when blood flow to the skin is cut off.
Here’s your quick guide to staying safe:
📍 Where do they happen?
They target areas where bone is close to the skin, including:
Heels & Ankles
Tailbone & Hips
Elbows & Shoulders
Back of the head
🔍 Spot the Signs
Check daily for:
Redness that doesn’t turn white when pressed (non-blanchable).
Skin changes: Feels warmer/cooler or firmer/spongier than the surrounding area.
Discomfort: Itching, burning, or pain.
📈 The 4 Stages
Stage 1: Intact skin with persistent redness.
Stage 2: Shallow open wound or a blister.
Stage 3: Deep crater exposing fat layers.
Stage 4: Severe damage reaching muscle, bone, or tendons.
✅ 5 Prevention Tips
Keep Moving: Change positions every 2 hours in bed or every 15-20 minutes in a wheelchair.
Stay Dry & Clean: Use gentle cleansers and barrier creams if needed; avoid scented soaps that dry out skin.
Hydrate & Fuel: Eat plenty of protein and drink 8-10 cups of water daily to maintain skin integrity.
Don’t Rub: Avoid massaging bony areas, as this can damage delicate tissue.
Use Tools: Ask about specialized foam or air mattresses and cushions.
95% of pressure ulcers are preventable! Early detection is key to avoiding serious infections like sepsis.
