On Thursday, November 27, 2025, the Treatment and Rehabilitation Center Development Committee met at the BHF/SMRU Office in Mae Ramat, Tak Province, to review key updates and plans for the year ahead.

The Meeting opened with remarks from the Mae Ramat District Chief, Mr. Parinya Sairoj, followed by a warm welcome from the SMRU director, Prof. Francois Nosten. Representatives from BHF/SMRU & Mae Ramat Hospital then shared updates on public health activities, including the TB situation in Tak Province and Mae Ramat district, the SMRU TB village services, maternal and child health care, immunization among migrant populations, malaria prevention & control activities, and community engagement initiatives.

The committee also discussed the funding situation for operations in 2026, plans for 2026, and a proposal for consideration and other matters. The meeting concluded with closing remarks, celebrating the ongoing collaboration to strengthen health services and community development along the Thai-Myanmar border in Tak province. .....................................................................

Rose McGready honoured for her work to improve healthcare for Thai-Myanmar border communities

On 17 Nov at a ceremony in Canberra, Prof Rose McGready, Deputy Director of the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU), was honoured with the 2026 ACT Australian of the Year Award for her extraordinary dedication over 30 years to improving healthcare for displaced and marginalised communities along the Thai-Myanmar border coupled with clinical and research work that has changed the treatment of malaria around the world, particularly for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and saved the lives of countless mothers and their babies.

Congratulations to our 2026 ACT Australian of the Year winners! 👏

They are:
• 2026 ACT Australian of the Year: Professor Rose McGready, a migrant and refugee health expert
• 2026 ACT Senior Australian of the Year: Heather Reid AM, a pioneer of women’s football
• 2026 ACT Young Australian of the Year: Sita Sargeant, founder of She Shapes History
• 2026 ACT Local Hero: Ben Alexander, co-founder of Running for Resilience

The award recipients were announced this evening in a ceremony at the National Gallery of Australia.

They will now represent the Canberra community in the national awards, which will be announced on 25 January 2026.

Faulty malaria rapid test raises global concerns, say MORU researchers.
5 November 2025.
A new study published in Malaria Journal warns that a widely used malaria rapid diagnostic test by Abbott Diagnostics may be delivering false-negative results, risking delayed treatment and fuelling malaria transmission. Researchers from SMRU have called for the test’s withdrawal, citing evidence from Southeast Asia.

On 25 October 2025, the Tak Province Community Advisory Board (T-CAB) held the Meeting from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the SMRU Meeting Room, Mae Ramat, Tak Province.

The meeting featured two key sessions:
Study Findings Presentation — “Migrant women's experience of antenatal care in urban and rural settings in North and North-West Thailand: A cross-sectional survey.”

Consultation for a New Study — “Informed Consent in Practice: A qualitative, embedded study of information, comprehension, and voluntariness in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and clinical trials on the Thailand–Myanmar border.”
