Let’s talk about Chickenpox — a common childhood illness that parents should be aware of. Here are some key facts about chickenpox to help you protect your child:
1. Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is highly contagious.
2. The virus spreads through direct contact with the blisters, breathing in droplets from saliva, nasal secretions, or mucus, or sharing items with an infected person.
3. Chickenpox is common in children and often spreads during cooler seasons. Adults with low immunity can also get infected and may have more severe symptoms.
4. Symptoms usually appear 10–21 days after exposure, starting with fever, headache, tiredness, itchiness, and rash on the skin.
5. The rash typically changes from red spots → fluid-filled blisters → scabs, which fall off on their own.
6. Most children recover without scarring, however secondary bacterial infection may lead to pus and skin wounds.
7. After recovering from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body and may reactivate later as shingles.
8. Treatment focuses on rest, drinking plenty of water, keeping the skin clean, trimming nails short, and relieving itchiness (such as with calamine lotion).
9. The chickenpox vaccine helps prevent infection in 70–85% of cases and reduces the risk of severe illness by more than 95%.
For parents who would like to protect their children, the chickenpox vaccine is included in our childhood vaccination programs, tailored to different age groups.
