🎉SiCORE-MSB Research Featured on the Front Cover of Analytical Chemistry

😀We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Pattipong Wisanpitayakorn, Dr. Adchata Konsue, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sakda Khoomrung of the Siriraj Center of Research Excellence in Metabolomics and Systems Biology (SiCORE-MSB), Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, on having their research featured on the front cover of Analytical Chemistry, one of the world’s leading journals in analytical science.

🌟Their study,
“Spatial Mapping of Stereoisomeric and Isobaric Alkaloids in Mitragyna speciosa Tissues by High-Resolution DESI-cIM-MS,”
introduces the world’s first stereoisomer-resolved mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) method using DESI–cIM–MS. This breakthrough overcomes a long-standing limitation of conventional MSI, enabling direct visualization of stereoisomers within intact tissues without complex sample preparation.

🥳The innovation significantly expands MSI applications in natural product research and biomedical science, supporting studies in stereoselective biosynthesis, in-tissue metabolism, molecular distribution, and stereochemistry-dependent biomarkers.

งานวิจัยของเราที่ตีพิมพ์ใน npj Genomic Medicine (Q1) เป็นครั้งแรกที่ประเมินประสิทธิภาพของ polygenic risk scores (PRSs) เพื่อทำนายความเสี่ยงโรคเมตาบอลิกและโรคหัวใจในคนไทยกว่า 4,800 คน

✨ สิ่งที่เราพบ
• คะแนน PRS สามารถบ่งบอกความเสี่ยง เบาหวานชนิดที่ 2 ได้อย่างมีนัยสำคัญ
คนที่มีคะแนน PRS สูง เสี่ยงเป็นเบาหวานมากขึ้น และมีโอกาสวินิจฉัยเร็วกว่า
• คะแนน PRS ของ ไขมันในเลือด (lipid traits) เช่น LDL-C, HDL-C และ TG
สามารถบอกแนวโน้มระดับไขมันได้แม่นยำตามลำดับ decile
• PRS สำหรับ โรคหัวใจและหลอดเลือด (CVD) ยังมีข้อจำกัดในคนไทย และให้ผลไม่สอดคล้องกับข้อมูลยุโรป—ตอกย้ำว่าความแตกต่างเชิงพันธุกรรมระหว่างเชื้อชาติส่งผลจริง
• งานนี้ชี้ให้เห็นว่า เอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ยังขาดข้อมูลพันธุกรรมอย่างมาก และหากมีฐานข้อมูลเฉพาะประชากรไทย ประสิทธิภาพ PRS จะดียิ่งขึ้น

โรคเมตาบอลิกเป็นสาเหตุการเสียชีวิตกว่า 1/3 ของผู้ใหญ่ในไทย การมีเครื่องมือทำนายความเสี่ยงล่วงหน้า จะช่วยให้

🏅 “PRS: A new way to see risk—long before disease begins.”
Our study, now published in npj Genomic Medicine (Q1), is the first to evaluate the performance of polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for metabolic and cardiovascular traits in more than 4,800 Thai adults.

✨ Key Findings
• PRSs strongly predicted type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk:
Individuals with higher PRS had significantly higher—and earlier—risk of developing T2D.
• PRSs for lipid traits (LDL-C, HDL-C, TG) showed clear, linear stratification across PRS deciles.
• The CVD PRS performed poorly and even showed a protective direction, highlighting ancestry differences and the limited transferability of European-based PRSs to Southeast Asians.
• The study underscores a major gap: Southeast Asians remain underrepresented in global genomics, and population-specific data are needed to improve PRS accuracy.

Metabolic diseases remain a leading cause of illness in Thailand.

“Breakthrough Metabolomics Study Highlights Hidden Gut Toxins in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients”

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Weerawan Manokasemsan, Dr. Narumol Jariyasopit, Dr. Kwanjeera Wanichthanarak, Asst. Prof. Dr.Sukit Raksasuk, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sakda Khoomrung of SiCORE-MSB and SiMPC, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, on their latest publication in the Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal (November 17, 2025):
“LC-MS/MS identifies elevated imidazole propionate and gut-derived metabolite alterations in peritoneal dialysis patients.”

🧬 Study Highlights

Chronic kidney disease continues to rise worldwide, and many kidney-failure patients rely on peritoneal dialysis (PD). However, new evidence suggests that gut-derived toxins may still accumulate despite treatment—with one metabolite standing out: Imidazole propionate (ImP).

Using a high-sensitivity LC–MS/MS workflow, the team quantified 16 uremic toxins and 14 bile acids in blood and stool samples simultaneously. One of the most striking findings is that ImP levels are markedly elevated in PD patients, including those without diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

ImP has previously been associated with metabolic dysfunction and cardiovascular risk, but this study reveals that kidney failure itself may drive ImP accumulation, making it a promising candidate as a novel risk marker in CKD.

These insights open the door to improved patient risk stratification and potential future interventions—ranging from dietary modulation and microbiome-based approaches to enhanced dialysis strategies.

The team is now expanding this work into a larger, longitudinal cohort integrating microbiome data to validate ImP and related metabolites as actionable biomarkers.

This achievement reflects 5–6 years of sustained collaboration between Siriraj and Ramathibodi.
