ปีพ.ศ.2475 หลังจากจบการศึกษาได้รับปริญญาแพทย์ศาสตร์บัณฑิตแผนตะวันตกจากนครเซี่ยงไฮ้ ประเทศจีน นายชัย ไชยนุวัติ จึงได้กลับมาสู่ประเทศไทย และได้เปิดคลินิกรักษาผู้ป่วยขึ้นเป็นคลินิกเอกชนแห่งแรกๆ ของชุมชนในแถบเจริญกรุง-เยาวราชที่เปิดทำการรักษาคนไข้ทั่วไปที่ริมถนนเจริญกรุง แยกเสือป่า โดยใช้ชื่อว่า ‘ห้างขายยาเบอร์ลิน’
คุณหมอได้อุทิศตนให้กับการรักษาคนไข้โดยไม่คำนึงถึงค่ารักษาพยาบาล คนไหนที่มีไม่พอจ่ายคุณหมอก็ไม่ว่า แถมยังให้เงินค่ารถกลับบ้านไปด้วย ด้วยความเมตตาอันเต็มเปี่ยม ผนวกกับความเฉียบแหลมในการวินิจฉัยโรคที่แหลมคมจากความรู้ที่เรียนมาและสูตรยาที่ดี จึงทำให้ชื่อเสียงของหมอเบอร์ลินหรือเรียกในหมู่คนจีนว่า หมอแป๊ะลิ้ม เป็นที่รู้จักในเวลาต่อมา

THE ORIGIN OF BERLIN PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY
After graduating with his degree in modern medicine from Shanghai, China in 1932, Dr.Chai Chainuvati returned to his home in Thailand to open his own clinic. It was among the first private modern medical clinics in Charoenkrung Road, in Chinatown area, Bangkok. He named his clinic ‘Berlin Dispensary’. He was well-known for his dedication and genuine care of his patients without being concerned about
medical fee collection. He was known to have even paid the bus fare for those who could not afford to pay their medical expense to return home. Kind-hearted and highly-skilled in providing the right diagnosis and treatment with effective drug formulation, Dr. Chai of “Berlin Dispensary” gradually gained respect with the community and a reputation of being a kind and loving human being. He was fondly referred to as ‘Berlin Doctor’ by the patients.
