📣 Announcement: The Ed & Nancy Chestnut Veterans Memorial Grant

Today, I’m honored to announce the creation of the Ed & Nancy Chestnut Veterans Memorial Grant, a lasting tribute to two people who shaped my life with unwavering love, strength, and integrity.

My grandfather, William Edwin “Ed” Chestnut, was the kind of man you could navigate life by. To me, he was John Wayne in the flesh, timeless strength, steadfast, hardworking, honest, and kind without ever being soft. Whenever life got heavy or confusing, I asked myself, “What would Papaw do?”
His example never failed me.

But behind every great man is often an even greater woman.
My grandmother, Nancy, was his anchor. Her love, care, and support were constants not just in the good years, but especially in the hardest ones. In his final days, she was there as she had always been, with compassion, loyalty, and strength. She embodies the spirit of devotion that women everywhere (military spouse or not) can look to with admiration. This grant bears both of their names because their love story, their resilience, and their example deserve to live on.

Grant Funding and Purpose

To honor their legacy, I am dedicating the $1,500 he left behind to establish this grant and I will continue this program annually for as long as I draw breath.

Two awards will be issued each year:

🌱 May 11: Veteran STEM Education Grant ($750)

Awarded on the anniversary of Ed’s passing, this grant will support veteran STEM students working toward degrees or training in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
It reflects the values he instilled: hard work, perseverance, and building a better future. He was a machinist, and a darn good one. He valued technology and education.

🌍 November 8: Veteran Support Grant Abroad ($750)

Awarded on Ed’s birthday, this grant will support a veteran abroad who is navigating hardship, healthcare needs, or unique challenges far from home.

A small committee will review applications, and the goal is simple: to lift burdens, open doors, and be the kind of blessing to others that my grandparents were to me.

A Legacy That Lives On

FMP Navigator is committed to serving veterans, especially those living overseas who struggle with access to the VA Foreign Medical Program. But beyond tools and technology, this mission is also about human impact.

Through this grant, Ed and Nancy’s legacy will continue touching lives, offering hope, and honoring veterans who deserve support, just as my grandfather always believed.

For perspective, coding an app, a website etc. takes considerable time and effort on behalf of the developer. An often unreported issue that adds time to target is one that is all too common yet frequently unreported by the developer for fear of scaring off potential users.

I am unafraid, I value transparency and today I'm here to tell you that not only the FMP Navigator app and website were at risk over the past several months but many of the everyday apps and websites, even your OS (macOS, Windows) are also at risk.

I have spent many hours, days and weeks hardening the code that serves you, I value your privacy and protection and I am vigilant in patching security on zero day exploits. Rest assured, your data privacy and security will always come first.

For posterity, please check for updates on your personal devices weekly. If there is an update, install it. That is one of your best defenses against catastrophy. So go now, update your phone, computer, smart TVs etc.

As we get deeper into the holiday season attacks will ramp up, many seeking to compromise your data in many ways, injection packages with keyloggers that will reveal your banking details, card numbers and other personal information are among them.

ALWAYS be doubly sure that the email you are receiving is from a legitimate source by checking the sender address and never give your PII out over text, email or voice chats.

Current VAFMP processing information. If you email HAC.FMP@va.gov you will receive an automated reply with this information at the end of the email. Not everyone is emailing the FMP frequently so moving forward I'll be sharing updates.

From the VAFMP:

We are currently opening mail received on 11/26/2025 oldest claim waiting for processing was received on 6/2/2025, uploading email claims received 11/29/2025, uploading faxed claimed received on 11/4/2025 and processing registrations received on 10/20/2025. This is confirmation your email has been received. If you submitted a claim or registration, please allow 30 - 45 days for the documents to be scanned into the system. If you submitted an inquiry, please allow 30 days for a more personalized response.

I didn’t anticipate receiving so many requests for assistance so soon and I’ve been handling a lot of offline interaction with veterans in need which put DEV work on the burner for a minute. I’m proud to say to date over 30 veterans, spouses and widows have been assisted, some outside the scope of the FMP Navigator Initiative.

Today is a good day! The “Contact Us” form is live on fmpnavigator.org. Putting in some DEVOps on the app this week, a few more UI/UX polishing passes and we’ll be ready to submit to Apple App Store and Google Play for the live beta testing. Following up on FOIA requests and a meeting to discuss enacting transportation to appointments coverage are also on the list this week and next.

Today I have an ironic treat for you all!

Recently I posted a cybersecurity awareness post. Ironically, enough about an hour ago I received an email from a suspect address claiming to be META Platforms (Facebook) essentially telling me my ad was in violation of the policies set forth by META.

THIS is what a phishing scam looks like. I went ahead and sandboxed it and checked out what they were looking for. They asked for a lot of sensitive information to include my Facebook password.

ALWAYS check the senders email address prior to clicking on anything.

🔒 Keeping You Safe Online: What You Should Know

Dear veterans, friends, and family of our community,

Cyber attacks over the past year have grown in both number and sophistication. Here’s what we’ve seen and what you can do to protect yourself and the ones you love.

📈 What’s been happening:

The global cost of data breaches reached around US $4.88 million on average in 2024 for organisations.

Fraudsters are increasingly targeting older adults. For example, Americans aged 60+ lost nearly US $5 billion to online fraud in 2024.

Phishing emails (fake-look emails that try to trick you into clicking a link or sharing information) and “too good to be true” offers are among the top threats.

🧰 Your Cyber Safety Guide:
Follow these steps in order, one at a time.

1. Strong, unique passwords

Use a separate password for each of your important accounts (bank, email, Facebook).

Make them long (12+ characters if possible) and include letters, numbers and symbols.

Consider using a password manager (many have free versions) so you don’t have to memorize all of them.

2. Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

For key accounts (banking, email, social media) enable a “second step” login: for example, a code sent to your phone.

Even if someone gets your password, they’ll still need that second step.

3. Update your devices regularly

When your computer, phone or tablet tells you there’s a software update, do it.

These updates often include important security fixes. Ignoring one is like leaving your front door unlocked.

4. Be skeptical of emails, texts or calls asking for quick action

Example: “Your bank account will be closed if you don’t click this link now.”

Never click a link or open an attachment unless you’re sure of the sender.

If someone calls and says “I’m from your bank, send me your card number to fix a problem”, hang up, call the bank yourself using a number you trust.

5. Check who has access to what you post online

On your social media accounts, check your privacy settings: limit how many people can see your posts and how much personal information you share.

Avoid posting: your full birth date, where you live, your bank, or other sensitive details publicly.

6. Back up important data

If you have photos, important documents or contact lists make a backup (to an external drive or secure cloud service).

In the event of a ransomware attack (where files are locked until money is paid) you’ll still have your copies.

7. Stay in the loop

Consider subscribing to newsletters or alerts from trusted sources (for example your bank’s security updates, senior-cyber-safety organisations).

Share what you learn with friends and family. Talking about it helps everyone stay safe.
