Space Bangkok Space Bangkok helps those addressing the biggest problems to do their best work. “It went on for years. And it is why we do this work.

I accompanied peacebuilders through their times of transition, struggle, crisis, realization, and healing. And all along I was dealing with my own struggles - the aftermath of harassment, grief, and my own burnout. While the demands for more and more creativity and innovation didn’t stop, I had no energy, no spark, to draw on. The forces that paved this road we walked gradually became clearer, as did the realization of their prevalence, not only in the peacebuilding field, but beyond. And echoing around it all was a single thought: this is wrong and it doesn’t have to be this way.” – Jenn Weidman, Founder & CEO

As a result, Space Bangkok was officially born in 2016 and we’ve been growing in depth and breadth ever since. With backgrounds working in the peace, development, and humanitarian sectors on difficult topics and in difficult situations, our Space Bangkok team is no stranger to the darker sides of difficult work. In fact, we are in many ways bound together through our common experiences of burnout, depression, grief, and other challenges. Having walked our own paths through darkness, we are magnetically drawn to finding better ways. Space Bangkok helps those addressing the most challenging problems do their best work through resilience building, process facilitation, peacebuilding, and training. We help individuals, teams, and organizations solve problems, think strategically, build resilience personally and organizationally, nurture their creative innovation, and build peace and understanding so they can thrive. Based in Bangkok, we work both regionally and globally and our team is fully bilingual in Thai and English. Connect with us to find out more at space@space-bangkok.com.

A week ago Space Bangkok was enjoying a day on the Chao Phraya River with the leadership of ICVA and their colleagues. We intentionally followed the lead of the river and took an easy going pace for our conversations.

Space Bangkok and Space Melbourne are deep into planning our next big things. We aren't often in the same place, so it is a treat to hunker down and put our heads together when we are. And what could be better than a good day's work in Charlie's back yard!

What topics can you facilitate?

This is the other most common question we are asked, and the answer often surprises people.

As facilitators, we guide and support process. The participants are the subject matter experts. That means we can facilitate around any topic.

We will guide and support your process and learn your language, context, and the peculiarities of your work. We can invite subject matter experts to input their ideas. In the end, you are the ones best placed to solve your problems, make your strategy, and move forward with your work, and our facilitated process can get you there.

Facilitating processes around a variety of topics means we are conversant on a diverse and disparate range of things - knowledge that is great at parties!

Yesterday Space Bangkok and Space Melbourne wrapped up our resilience retreat in Phuket, Thailand, with funny faces, renewed energy, new perspectives and tools, and personal resilience plans in hand.

One participant brought some data to her final reflection. After six years of wearing a health tracker and watching her resting heart rate increase one beat per year each year despite her ongoing fitness regime, she shared that her resting heart rate had dropped four beats in the past four days!

Our retreats always delve into the connection between resilience and holistic wellbeing, and this time the proof was in the heartbeats.

Just our second day here at the Resilience Retreat, and it already feels so refreshing and grounding. Surrounded by the sound of the ocean and the Phuket breeze, we’re finding moments to pause, reconnect, and reflect - both with ourselves and with one another.

The journey isn’t over yet, but each day reminds us how resilience grows quietly through presence, connection, and simple joy.

Our Story

It went on for years. I accompanied peacebuilders through their times of transition, struggle, crisis, realization, and healing. And all along I was dealing with my own struggles - the aftermath of harassment, grief, and my own burnout. The forces that paved this road we walked gradually became clearer, as did the realization of their prevalence, not only in the peacebuilding field, but beyond. And echoing around it all was a single thought: this is wrong and it doesn’t have to be this way. All the while, I was doing work that regularly required creativity and innovative ideas for problem solving and program development and improvement. And I increasingly found it impossible to meet this demand. The spark of creativity inside me was dead, thus there was no creative energy to feed innovation. And I had no idea where to find it, how to restart it, or where to even start looking for answers. My experience is in no way unique. Far too many of us unnecessarily find ourselves where I did. As with many journeys, mine included a crucial turning point. It was the moment I refused to accept this reality and at the same time rejected the most often shared advice that healing myself would mean changing my situation in ways that were not possible for me at the time. It was the moment I became determined to find some other way out. As I forged my way, an idea that had lingered for years finally began to gain purpose and take shape. Something could most certainly be done about the unwellness of peacebuilders and others. Both individual and structural forces were at work, and both levels could be engaged. The gap of the inadequacy of the existing resources I had access to could be filled. We could do better at supporting people and organizations towards resilience. Ultimately, the pursuit of this mission led to starting Space Bangkok, an organization working to promote resilience and innovation by changing the how of what we do individually and organizationally through encouraging ongoing reflective practice and incorporating reflective elements in leadership, capacity building, facilitation, problem solving, and other work. For me, Space Bangkok brings together an absorbing need to delve more deeply into reflective practice and ways to nurture inner creativity with a passion for peacebuilding, training, and facilitation. In blending these elements, we are working to equip and accompany for resilience, growth, transformation, and peace. Jenn Weidman Founder & Managing Director/CEO
