What’s the biggest difference between climbing outdoors and inside the gym?

The obvious answer is that you don’t have distinctive holds guiding you up the wall— which requires more body awareness and patience. When you climb outdoors, you also need a more extensive skill set: you need to know how to set up a route, read a topo, manage and care for your gear, clean an anchor, and manage risk between bolts on a wall with features.

The biggest difference is exposure to the elements. A climbing gym is a controlled environment; outdoors, you’re moving through nature. You can’t fully predict or control the conditions. But that’s what makes it beautiful.

“The adventures I’d asked of my body throughout my twenties crept up on me in my thirties. Pain and the loss of mobility scared me into realising that relying on youth alone wasn’t going to cut it anymore.

I was nervous about making existing injuries worse but Alekos’ physiotherapeutic expertise and his incredible attention to detail built so much trust. It’s been three months and we’ve eradicated most of the problems I arrived with, and I’m now armed with the know-how to soothe issues when they do flair up. When I leave Chiang Mai I’ll be working with ReWilder remotely. I guess what I hadn’t expected was that it would be so enjoyable. They totally got my goal of “wanting to be a really competent cave woman” rather than looking a certain way. And they’ve woven my personal goals of land stewardship into designing my training routine. They’re also just really great company to hang out with while we do the hard stuff.”

“I was stuck in a slow downward spiral— years of decreasing mobility due to joint pain and then a total knee replacement. Previous treatment and therapy revolved around pain management and lacked the hard work of rebuilding strength to support my aging body. Alekos went after the source of the pain. We met three times a week for two-hour sessions. We began the hard work of literally rewiring my brain to engage muscles correctly so I could load and protect joints.

“After three weeks, I could more than double my capacity by moving correctly. Vastly more important than kilos lifted, however, was hope — a knowledge of what is possible for living well in the second half of life. Alekos earned my trust slowly through his keen and persistent observation, cheerful attitude, and systematic mindset. Stepping out of my life in the Arctic and committing 3 weeks to the project was crucial (I suggest longer if you can!).”
— Steve Levey, 60-years-old

Max has had five years of debilitating pain that took away running, dancing, cycling, and hiking. After months of remote work with us, he traveled from Germany for a week-long rehab intensive, and returned home sore from the training but no longer in pain.

“Five years of chronic pain and instability in my SI joints, dozens of experts in Germany and the US, and no results— until I worked with ReWilder! In just a few days, I moved from being perpetually injured to trail running and deadlifting my own bodyweight with confidence. Alekos enjoys solving the tricky cases. His insight and understanding of the human body and its movement patterns was several levels above any other expert I’ve seen.”— Max, 36 years old

Last Saturday, we took folks on a morning run through mist and low temperatures, followed by an afternoon climb on crags cooled by the breeze, with only the local wildlife for company.

Into The Wild, our one-day outdoor retreat, isn’t about resolutions or transformation. We take who we are on trail and rock, and make peace with them.

“A well-run, energising day with great people. Physically demanding, thoughtfully guided, and the kind of experience that leaves you pleasantly wrecked and wanting more.”
—Carrie, forty-something

“It was the best day of the year so far with a run and a climb in one day!”
—Taia, 8 years old

“Into the Wild was both energising and grounding. We spent the day outdoors exploring new running trails and leveling up our outdoor climbing.”
—Avika, 30 years old

We’re already looking forward to next year’s Into the Wild on Jan 15-17— we’re taking two days/two nights this time.

Chris’ first triathlon event this weekend was the culmination of two years of hard work— to stabilise and strengthen his compromised shoulders and left knee. A sprint under two hours at 52 is no small feat.

Often we come to the wall thinking only of the send. We worry if we have the strength, or if the climb is too difficult for what we have in the tank. We want it to be a good climb.

ReMind outdoor climbing sessions are about lifting the hood and tinkering with the mind we bring to the crag. We watch how our mind reacts when the terrain gets exposed or when plans fall apart but we have to commit anyway. We see the patterns we default to under stress; where we tense up, hesitate, and brute force.

By the end of a ReMind climbing session, we are more aware of how our climbing skills and mindset come together.
