SIMPLE PRACTICAL TIPS FOR MANAGING CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTURM DISORDER (ASD) 💙
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder need understanding, patience, and support. Here are six (6) easy ways how to do it:
1️⃣ Keep routines consistent
Children feel safer when they know what will happen next. Give warnings before changes.
👉 Example: Every day after school, follow the same order - snack, homework, playtime, dinner. Hence, if there will be a change, you can say: “In 5 minutes, we will stop playing and eat dinner.”
2️⃣ Use clear, simple words
Say exactly what you mean.
👉 Instead of: “Behave yourself.”
You can say: “Please sit on the chair.”
Give one instruction at a time.
3️⃣ Create a calm space
A quiet corner can help when they feel overwhelmed.
👉 Example: Set up a quiet corner with a pillow, soft toy, or headphones. When your child feels upset, guide them there to relax.
4️⃣ Stay calm during meltdowns
👉 If your child is crying because plans changed, speak softly:
“I see you’re upset. It’s okay. Let’s take deep breaths.”
Avoid shouting/yelling or long explanations.
5️⃣ Focus on strengths
Every child has special talents. Encourage what they love.
👉 If your child loves dinosaurs, use dinosaur books to practice reading or counting. Turn their interest into a learning tool.
6️⃣ Give praise for small progress
Celebrate small steps. They matter!
👉 If your child makes eye contact or waits their turn, say:
“Great job for patiently waiting!" - small encouragement builds confidence.
💙 Every child learns differently.
With patience, structure, and kindness, they can thrive.
