Strengthening Nutrition Through NSA Training of Trainers (ToT)

Last week, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP-TL), with support from Australian funded program TOMAK, successfully conducted a Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture (NSA) Training of Trainers (ToT) for selected participants who will become future facilitators of the NSA module for health personnel in Timor-Leste.

The participants were representatives from Municipal health services from Baucau and Bobonaro, trainers from INSP-TL, as well as the staff from the National Directorate of Nutrition – Ministry of Health.

The training will equip participants with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to deliver the NSA module effectively strengthening nutrition integration across the health sector.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in practical learning activities, including group discussions, hands-on exercises, and micro-teaching sessions designed to prepare them for delivering future NSA trainings at both municipal and national levels.

🤝 TOMAK sincerely thanks all participants and partners for their commitment, collaboration, and active engagement throughout the week. Together, we continue to support stronger nutrition services and healthier communities across Timor-Leste.

Promoting Strawberry Cultivation in Bobonaro! 🍓

Our field team, together with farmers and local extension workers in Aldeia Laktil, Suku Bobonaro municipality of Bobonaro is supporting local farmers in exploring strawberry cultivation — a promising horticultural activity suited to the region’s cool climate at 700–900 meters above sea level.

The first seeds, sourced from Maubisse, were introduced to Bobonaro with an initial batch of 150 seedlings. These were planted near homes to encourage local participation and observation. Once the plants produced runners, they were transferred to polybags and nurseries for adaptation and further growth.

With proper care and good soil quality, strawberries can be harvested within 2–3 months, providing farmers with a new source of income and promoting agricultural diversification in the highlands of Timor-Leste.

Today, we celebrate strong, hardworking, and inspiring women in our community — like Mana Josefina, one of our dedicated women farmers.

“As a farmer, I used to think there were no more opportunities to improve my life. But after joining the TOMAK-supported group, everything changed! I’ve learned so much — especially from the collector training, which helped me understand how to become a successful collector.

Now, I know how to transport my products safely, so they stay fresh and high-quality when they reach the supermarket. Visiting the supermarket was eye-opening — I realized there’s so much potential to grow and offer more quality products!”

Mana Josefina is a role model which encourage and inspires other women to follow her path — paving the way for a better life and brighter future for everyone.

Strengthening Nutrition Knowledge Among Health Workers

TOMAK, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH) through INSP-TL, conducted Follow-Up After Training (FUAT) sessions for 97 health workers in Bobonaro and Viqueque who previously participated in the Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture (NSA) training.

The FUAT aims to assess the knowledge of health workers on NSA and how they are applying it in their daily work to improve nutrition outcomes in their communities.

Eurico Amaral, a nurse working at Aitara Health Post, Lacluta (Viqueque), shared that “the NSA training is essential for health workers to strengthen their understanding of nutrition, particularly the important link between agriculture and nutrition.” He also mentioned that through the knowledge gained from the training, he has been able to help several families with children under five recovering from moderate malnutrition by promoting nutritious foods from the three food groups.

Through its ongoing partnership, the government of Australia’s program - TOMAK remains committed to empowering health workers with the skills and knowledge to strengthen community nutrition across Timor-Leste.

Local Food, Global Future – Strengthening Local Food Systems for a Healthy Tomorrow
Join hands. Work for better food and a better future.

Today, we celebrate the vital role of local agriculture in ensuring that everyone — in every community — has access to safe, nutritious, and affordable food.

From the farm to the table, TOMAK is at the heart of this transformation. Together with farmers, collectors, and the private sector, we are building a future where Timor-Leste’s local food thrives — both at home and beyond.

🌾 Supporting smallholder farmers with training, tools, and access to markets to strengthen local food production
🌱 Promoting climate-smart and sustainable farming practices that protect our land and water
👩‍🌾 Empowering women and youth to take leadership roles in agriculture and agribusiness
🤝 Building inclusive systems that ensure fair prices and food access for all
💼 Helping the private sector identify and promote locally produced food to drive economic growth and resilience

Through these efforts, we are not only growing food — we are growing resilience, opportunity, and hope.

Recently, our team proudly joined the National Expo, supporting the Buy Local movement and showcasing a range of locally products that reflect Timor-Leste’s potential under the vision of “Local Food, Global Future.”

Happy International Day of Rural Women!

Rural Women Sustaining Nature for Our Collective Future"

Local theme: Invest in Rural Women as Preservers of Food and Nature, the Way to a Sustainable and Resilient Future

Today, we celebrate the heart of rural communities — women farmers who are not only feeding families but also protecting and preserving both food and nature for generations to come.

Across our programs, we see rural women leading in:
✅ Sustainable farming practices
✅ Improving food security and nutrition
✅ Building resilient households and communities

Despite challenges, they continue to innovate, nurture, and lead. Their work is essential to building food security, climate resilience, and thriving rural economies.

They are not just farmers — they are stewards of sustainability, guardians of biodiversity, and leaders in resilience.

Let us continue to support and invest in rural women farmers —when they grow, communities grow, when we stand with them, we build a stronger and greener future for all.

To all the rural women we work with — we thank you and stand with you.

In Suku Makadiki, Watulari, farmers faced constant challenges when their machinery broke down. These breakdowns were costly and disruptive – delaying planting and harvesting, slowing crop processing, and limiting the ability of farmers to bring produce to market.

That’s when Justino and his colleagues stepped in. Through Australia’s TOMAK Timor-Leste program, they turned new skills from hands-on training in farm machinery maintenance and repair into a micro-enterprise. Today, they fix broken tillers, provide low-cost rental services, and deliver practical solutions that keep farming moving in their community.
