With support from the Australian Government’s DFAT-funded agriculture program, TOMAK, we have established a Hydroponic Learning Initiative at the AHDRO office in Maliana. This new training center offers individuals with disabilities the opportunity to learn modern, accessible agricultural techniques that enhance their livelihoods, independence, and economic empowerment.
After several weeks of learning and planting with the system, participants are now reaping the rewards—enjoying their first harvest of fresh vegetables from their hard work.

💬 Antonio Barreto, participant with a physical disability, shared:
“Hydroponics is a completely new activity for us. Before, we planted in soil, but now we’ve learned how to cultivate crops without soil, which reduces physical strain and uses only a small amount of water. This method is efficient and accessible for us.”

We look forward to expanding this initiative and continuing to build a more inclusive and empowered future for all. 🌱♿💚

Strengthening Livelihoods Through Improved Farming Facilities! 🐓🐖🌱

Our team has recently delivered chicken coop and pig pen materials to farmers in Bobonaro and Lolotoe. This support is part of our continued effort to empower farmers who have already established 22 poultry farms and 12 pig farms across the two administrative posts.

Well-designed chicken coops and pig pens are essential for boosting productivity. They help protect animals from predators, reduce disease risks, and ensure healthier and more comfortable living conditions. As a result, families can achieve higher production, better household nutrition, and increased income.

We are proud to stand alongside farmers as they strengthen local food security and build a more resilient agricultural sector.
This activity is supported by TOMAK, a DFAT-funded agriculture program.

Promoting Strawberry Cultivation in Bobonaro! 🍓

Our field team, together with farmers and local extension workers in Aldeia Laktil, Suku Bobonaro municipality of Bobonaro is supporting local farmers in exploring strawberry cultivation — a promising horticultural activity suited to the region’s cool climate at 700–900 meters above sea level.

The first seeds, sourced from Maubisse, were introduced to Bobonaro with an initial batch of 150 seedlings. These were planted near homes to encourage local participation and observation. Once the plants produced runners, they were transferred to polybags and nurseries for adaptation and further growth.

With proper care and good soil quality, strawberries can be harvested within 2–3 months, providing farmers with a new source of income and promoting agricultural diversification in the highlands of Timor-Leste.

Today, we celebrate strong, hardworking, and inspiring women in our community — like Mana Josefina, one of our dedicated women farmers.

“As a farmer, I used to think there were no more opportunities to improve my life. But after joining the TOMAK-supported group, everything changed! I’ve learned so much — especially from the collector training, which helped me understand how to become a successful collector.

Now, I know how to transport my products safely, so they stay fresh and high-quality when they reach the supermarket. Visiting the supermarket was eye-opening — I realized there’s so much potential to grow and offer more quality products!”
