Where the Sky of Our Childhood Go When We Grow Up?

This session will focus on Yenal Bilgici's two books ("Cebimdeki Ekmek Kırıntıları” (2022) and "İsim Şehir Film Roman" (2024)) that accompany the narration of the life story of writer, actor, director and screenwriter Ercan Kesal.

Ercan Kesal's life story, which began in Avanos, reaches the present day with his university days in Izmir, his years as a physician in Anatolia, his experience in France, his private hospital business in Istanbul, his meeting with Metin Erksan, his entry into cinema circles, and the diversification and enrichment of his artistic production, in these books, Ercan Kesal does not only tell an individual story, but also examines his family, the neighbourhood, town, regional culture, cities, various professional circles and society as intersecting circles. While Kesal deals with the interactions between the dynamics of his psyche and social dynamics, he also follows the projections of the political, social and cultural changes of the last fifty or sixty years of the country. The conversation will particularly focus on the consequences of this change, transformation and interaction that are evident in his psyche and in his artistic expressions

Çocukluğumuzdaki Gökyüzü Biz Büyüyünce Nereye Gider?

Bu oturumda Yenal Bilgici’nin yazar, oyuncu, yönetmen ve senarist Ercan Kesal’ın yaşam hikayesinin anlatımına eşlik ederek kaleme aldığı iki kitabına (“Cebimdeki Ekmek Kırıntıları (2022)” ve “İsim Şehir Film Roman” (2024) yoğunlaşılacaktır.
Ercan Kesal’ın Avanos’ta başlayan yaşam öyküsü İzmir’deki üniversite günleri, Anadolu’daki hekimlik yılları, Fransa’daki deneyimi, İstanbul’da özel hastane işletmesi, Metin Erksan’la tanışması, sinema çevrelerine girmesi, sanatsal üretiminin çeşitlenmesi ve zenginleşmesi ile günümüze ulaşıyor. Ercan Kesal kitaplarında tüm bu süreci bir yolculuk olarak ele alırken, sadece bireysel bir öykü anlatmıyor, ailesini, içinde yaşadığı mahalleyi, kasabayı, bölgesel kültürü, şehirleri, çeşitli mesleki çevreleri ve toplumu, birbirleriyle kesişen çemberler olarak irdeliyor. Kesal ruhsallığının dinamikleriyle toplumsal dinamikler arasındaki etkileşimleri ele alırken, ülkenin son elli altmış yılının siyasi, sosyal ve kültürel değişimlerinin izdüşümlerini de takip ediyor. Söyleşi, özellikle bu değişim, dönüşüm ve etkileşimin onun ruhsallığında belirginleşen sonuçlarına ve bunların sanatsal ifadelerine odaklanacaktır.

The Discovery of Siblings: Oedipus joins a therapy group

Human beings are a social species. We do not spend our lives in twos, in dyads. From the beginning we are part of a group of three, each of us having been born into that th*****me: mother, father and infant. In individual treatment the third party is present in the mind and in phantasy; in a therapy group, that third party is present in the room, not only in the mind. The belief, conscious or unconscious, that one is a parent’s only or most favoured child may be universal. Oedipus himself is felt to be unique, and special. In individual settings in which Oedipal issues emerge, the analyst is perceived as belonging to the more knowledgeable or parental generation, becoming the object of possessive love or rivalrous hostility. In this paper, I will give material showing how as members of a psychoanalytic therapy group realise that they must share the presence of a single therapist, they turn to each other for understanding instead of always to the therapist. Thus in terms of the generations, the connectedness in the room is primarily lateral, or horizontal, rather than vertical. This reflects Bion’s description of the move into a Work Group and away from a Basic Assumption Dependency group.

Members come to develop strong connections with each other. They are not family, neither are they friends, nor colleagues, although relationships within the group contain elements of each. As individual differences produce rivalries, irritations and alliances, as well as loyalties and feelings of affection, relationships in the group seem similar to those between siblings in a large family: Intimate knowledge of each other, a common language, plain – even blunt - speaking, which might include jokes; and an ambience that is ultimately supportive.

İnsan sosyal bir türdür. Hayatımızı ikili gruplar halinde, ikili ilişkiler içinde geçirmiyoruz. Başından beri üçlü bir grubun parçasıyız ve her birimiz bu üçlünün içine doğmuşuzdur: Anne, baba ve bebek. Bireysel terapide üçüncü taraf zihinde ve düşlemde mevcuttur; terapi grubunda ise üçüncü taraf sadece zihinde değil, bizzat odadadır. Bilinçli veya bilinçdışı olarak, kişinin ebeveyninin tek veya en sevdiği çocuğu olduğuna dair inanç evrensel olabilir. Oidipus'un kendisi de benzersiz ve özel olarak hissetmiştir. Oedipus nitelikli sorunların ortaya çıktığı bireysel ortamlarda, analist daha bilgili veya ebeveyn nesline ait olarak algılanır ve sahiplenici bir sevginin veya rekabetçi bir düşmanlığın nesnesi haline gelir. Bu makalede, psikanalitik terapi grubunun üyelerinin, tek bir terapistin varlığını paylaşmak zorunda olduklarını fark ettiklerinde, her zaman terapiste değil, anlayış için birbirlerine başvurduğunu gösteren malzemeler sunacağım. Bu nedenle, nesiller açısından, odadaki bağlantı öncelikle dikey değil, yanal veya yataydır. Bu, Bion'un Temel Varsayım Bağımlılığı grubundan uzaklaşıp Çalışma Grubuna geçişi tanımlamasını yansıtmaktadır.

Üyeler birbirleriyle güçlü bağlar geliştirirler. Onlar ne aile ne de arkadaş ya da ne de meslektaşlardır, ancak grup içindeki ilişkiler her birinden unsurlar içerir. An Overview of the Dynamics of Societies

In this presentation, W. Bion's 1961 article "Group Dynamics”" will be reviewed from the perspective of John Steiner's concept of psychic retreats. In addition, we aim to provide examples that will help us examine the social phenomena that we deeply experience today through the thought practices presented by these articles. Bion argues that an adult who seeks to connect with the emotional life of societies faces a struggle as immense as that of a baby trying to connect with the mother's breast. In his article, he deliberately distanced himself from familiar concepts of psychoanalysis and introduced several concepts such as "the basic assumption group, the work group, dependent, pairing and fight-flight groups and valency." These concepts refer to the infant-breast relationship mentioned at the beginning of the article and the individual's conflicted psychic birth. John Steiner describes psychic retreat as "a space far removed from the experience of the unexperienced parts of the self, from being seen, from the sight of seeing eyes." According to him, psychic retreat is a place free from the influence of Klein's paranoid and depressive processes. It is a protected shortcut. Its foundations are formed by narcissism, which the individual uses as a defense against infantile shame. The presentation will be aiming to discuss the similarities of the intimate and protected structure of the upper identity, as described by Freud, McDougall, and Le Bon, with the concept of psychic retreat.
