Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia doesn't mean a person has "split personality" as some people mistakenly believe 👎… No, it's a chronic mental illness that affects thinking, perception, emotions, and behavior. The patient sometimes lives in a world different from the one around them.

Definition

Schizophrenia:

It is a chronic mental disorder characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking and speech, along with impaired cognitive and social abilities.

Causes

Scientists believe the illness results from a combination of:

Genetic factors: If there is a family history of the disease.

Biological factors: Imbalance in brain chemistry, particularly dopamine.

Environmental factors: Severe psychological stress, substance abuse, or childhood trauma.

👀 Symptoms

Symptoms are divided into 3 main types:

1. Positive symptoms:

Hallucinations: The most common is hearing voices.

Delusions: Strange, unreal beliefs.

Disorganized speech.

2. Negative symptoms:

Emotional detachment.

Lack of motivation.

Social withdrawal.

3. Cognitive symptoms:

Difficulty concentrating.

Memory problems. Impaired decision-making.

Diagnosis is based on clinical psychiatric evaluation.

Symptoms must be persistent for at least 6 months.

There is no blood test or imaging that directly confirms schizophrenia.

Treatment is long-term and requires patience:
