Monk reinterprets traditional Zen lines through an innovative and contemporary lens. The spatial identity draws its depth from four essential materials: wood, natural stone, terracotta, and metal. Using a minimal material palette to create rich layers, the design directly references Zen principles of simplicity, naturalness, and tranquillity.

The koi fish pattern, designed in Japanese grit in harmony with the atmosphere of the space and representing strength and success in Asian philosophy, creates a striking presence on the ceiling façade of the restaurant.

Monk is an innovative adaptation of traditional Zen lines, with the entire design and brand identity by Wangan. The design, which features inherently dynamic and complex detailed patterns, is essentially made up of processed materials from four basic elements: wood, natural stone, terracotta, and metal.

In the project, where unique layers were created with very few materials, direct reference is made to the values of simplicity, naturalness, and tranquillity of Zen philosophy. The main lines and hidden details of the design, which emphasize the choice of natural materials, are inspired by the curved and linear structure of Zen gardens.

Entering Monk, a Japanese restaurant where Wangan translates Zen philosophy into a contemporary spatial narrative. Rooted in Dhyana, the first-century school of meditation, Zen teaches presence, clarity, and experiencing the journey itself. Named in homage to the monks who follow this path, Monk blends modern Japanese and Asian cuisine with a spatial world shaped by the values of simplicity, naturalness, and tranquillity.

At the entrance, an amorphous corridor introduces a sculptural and slightly mystical atmosphere, while elements reminiscent of traditional Japanese walls intensify the sense of depth. The signature pattern developed by Wangan for the brand unites the rhythm of Zen gardens with the poetic silhouette of sakura branches.

A project that marks Wangan Studio’s first architectural milestone.
At 2,000 meters, Kaya Palazzo Ski Lounge reinterprets the contemporary mountain lodge through Wangan Studio’s architectural language. Timber, steel, and a fully reinforced concrete base come together to form a calm architectural silhouette with an 8.5 meter ceiling height and direct access to the ski slopes.
