In September, 9-year-old Mohammed arrived from Morocco and underwent a successful liver transplant from his mother. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal and his team performed transplants for three other children from Morocco within the same week. All of them have been discharged, and now it was Mohammed’s turn.
While riding his scooter through the transplant ward, he eagerly awaited the architect of his journey to a new life. Prof. Dr. Haberal made his morning rounds, performing Mohammed’s final check-up. Before leaving the hospital that had become their home in Turkey, Mohammed and his mother visited Prof. Haberal in his office.
Prof. Dr. Haberal showed Mohammed around his office before seeing him off. The 9-year-old victor of a renewed life journey bid farewell with gratitude, thanks, and a bittersweet smile — never letting go of Prof. Haberal’s hand.
And so, through the door opened half a century ago, another child regained his health. Turkey will celebrate the 50th anniversary of organ transplantation on November 3rd.
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal will also bring the world together in Ankara at the 19th International Congress of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation (MESOT), which he founded.
