➡️ In IVF treatments, ovulation does not occur within a natural cycle, and the timing of embryo transfer varies depending on the treatment protocol used. Therefore, calculating gestational age based on the actual last menstrual period (LMP) can sometimes be misleading.
🧐 So how should we respond when asked about the last menstrual period during pregnancy follow-ups?
➡️In a woman with regular cycles, ovulation typically occurs 14 days after the first day of menstruation, and the fertilized egg implants in the uterus approximately 5 days later.

🧮 In other words, we consider that a day-5 embryo implants around 19 days after the first day of the cycle:

📌 If a day-5 embryo was transferred: Count back 19 days from the embryo transfer date to determine the adjusted last menstrual period.

📌 If a day-3 embryo was transferred: Count back 17 days from the transfer date.

✅ Briefly, in IVF pregnancies, gestational age is sometimes calculated not according to the actual last menstrual period, but according to the developmental age of the embryo at transfer.

❗️I’d like to clarify a very common misunderstanding here ❗️ The numbers you often see, such as 3, 4, or 5, do not indicate embryo quality. They simply describe the embryo’s developmental stage—how much it has expanded.
➡️ The indicators of quality are the letters, such as AA or AB, which reflect the structure of the inner cell mass and the outer cell layer.
✅ So what really matters is not the number of the embryo, but whether it is the right embryo. 👌🏻

🔍In previous years, the answer to this question was “Yes”.
The reason for this was that the freezing and subsequent thawing procedures used for embryo preservation could adversely affect embryo viability and quality. Therefore, in order to increase the chance of pregnancy, the transfer of more than one embryo into the uterus was a commonly preferred approach.
✅ However, the situation has changed in recent years. With advances in cryopreservation technology, freezing and thawing processes no longer have a negative impact on embryo viability or quality.
❇️ As a result, single embryo transfer has become the preferred strategy in most assisted reproductive treatments. Consequently, the rate of multiple pregnancies following in vitro fertilization has significantly decreased.

🔬 At this point, we can employ several methods to support oocyte activation in IVF procedures.
🎯 Depending on the clinical situation, mechanical, chemical, or electrical activation techniques can be preferred. In appropriately selected cases, these approaches allow us to obtain better fertilization rates and consequently embryos of higher number and quality.

➡️ For example, you retrieved 10 oocytes. Six of them fertilized, and three developed into day-5 embryos. However, only one was found to be genetically normal. You proceeded with a transfer, and pregnancy either did or did not occur.

✅We know that in every cycle, the developmental potential of the eggs your body provides—and their implantation capacity—can be different. Under the right treatment protocol and optimal laboratory conditions, it is sometimes possible to achieve pregnancy and a healthy live birth with a single retrieved oocyte, while in other cases, repeated attempts may be required despite retrieving many eggs.

Sevgili önce erken doğum tehdidi nedeniyle sık sık hastaneye gelip gitti. Daha sonra gebelik kolestazı dediğimiz tablo gelişti ve daha da yakın takibe başladık… Öykümüze erken su gelişi de eklenince hastaneye yatış kaçınılmaz oldu.

Gerekli önlemlerden sonra Ada ve Ege’yi 33. haftada kucağımıza aldık.

Büyümelerini küvözde bir süre özenle takip etti ve sağlıkla taburcu oldular. ☀️
