We had an issue this morning at Central Animal Hospital. A client called claiming they had adopted their pet from another client and requested the medical notes/history for that pet.
We had to decline, much to the dismay of the caller.
Although we allegedly might have sern the animal with the new owner we cannot divulge the notes made previous to them owning it, especially after just a phone call.
Ethically we require the past owner to personally appear and formally request their pet's history. Then we will compile the notes and send them to the previous owner. What they choose to do with the information at that point is up to them.
Unfortunately, not everyone appreciates these nuances.

Hot take: the phrase “can’t afford the vet, can’t afford the pet” is oversimplified and often unfair.

Not being able to cover an unexpected, high-cost veterinary emergency does NOT automatically make someone a bad pet parent. Veterinary medicine has advanced rapidly, and with that progress has come rising costs that can catch even the most devoted owners off guard.

What matters most is this: is the pet’s welfare being protected?

Responsible pet ownership means providing the essentials:
✔️ A safe, clean place to live
✔️ Fresh water available at all times
✔️ Regular, complete and balanced nutrition
✔️ Core vaccines to prevent serious disease
✔️ Parasite prevention

If those needs are being met, even with budget-friendly options, that pet is still benefiting from a loving home.

Sometimes, despite our best intentions, families are faced with heartbreaking financial decisions. Choosing humane euthanasia or surrender to prevent suffering is an act of compassion, not failure.

We can advocate for preparedness (pet insurance, savings plans, etc.) without shaming people who are doing their best.

Because at the end of the day, pets need loving homes and good pet parents come from many financial situations. 🤍🐾

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) primarily affects cloven-hoofed animals (those with divided hooves), including both domestic livestock and wild species. The disease is highly contagious and causes blisters on the mouth, tongue, teats, and between the hooves. Trinidad and Tobago is listed as an FMDV free country. If you are listed as an FMDV endemic county there are very serious ramifications for the sake of your animal products and livestock.
Venezuela IS NOT LISTED AS FMDV FREE.
Yet livestock and livestock products are allegedly being smuggled into Trinidad from there. If this is being done we are putting our farmers are signicant risk!

Here are the specific animals that can get FMD:
Domestic Livestock
Cattle (cows)
Pigs (including domestic hogs)
Sheep
Goats
Water Buffalo
Camelids (Alpacas, Llamas, and Bactrian Camels)

Wildlife
More than 70 species of wild animals can be infected, including:
Deer (White-tailed, Mule, Red, Fallow, and Roe deer)
Wild Boar
African Buffalo
Antelope
Bison
Elk
Giraffe
Elephants
Hedgehogs

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

📌Most emergencies didn’t start as emergencies.
They started as:
• “He’s just not eating well.”
• “It’s just small diarrhea.”
• “Let’s watch him for a few days.”
And then suddenly… it’s critical.

Note: Preventive care is cheaper than treatment. Early diagnosis is less painful than emergency intervention. Professional guidance is safer than guessing with Google or using human drugs.

Your pet doesn’t complain. Your pet endures.
And by the time they show serious signs, the problem is already advanced.

👉The real question is this:
Are you being proactive with your pet’s health — or are you only reacting when it becomes a crisis?

📌COMMON MISTAKES PET OWNERS MAKE (And Why They Cost You More in the End)

1️⃣ Using Human Medication on Pets
Your dog or cat is not a small human.
Some human drugs are toxic to animals — even in small doses.
2️⃣ Repeating Old Prescriptions Without Re-Examination
Symptoms can look the same but have different causes.
What worked last time may worsen the current problem.
3️⃣ Stopping Treatment Once the Pet “Looks Better”
Improvement is not recovery.
Stopping early leads to relapse, drug resistance, and higher future costs.
4️⃣ Buying Drugs Without Professional Guidance
Trial-and-error treatment delays proper diagnosis and wastes money.
Wrong drug. Wrong dose. Wrong duration. Big consequences.
Good intentions are not enough.
Proper diagnosis + Correct drug + Right dosage + Full course = Real results.
If you truly love your pet, treat professionally — not emotionally.

🚸How many times have you reused an old prescription without checking the cause?

Unfortunately, Oliver (the mastiff with soft tissue spindle cell sarcoma at the elbow- see our previous post about his case) has passed on. Throughout his illness he was well taken care of and died peacefully at home.
