Dr. Clifford Thomas and Dr. Iovank Gonzalez received a surprise visit today from Dr. Simone McFee - who is now a Specialist Medical Officer in Internal Medicine.

Dr. McFee completed her DM postgraduate program in December 2024, after conducting a research study in collaboration with Premier Heart Care, the Tobago Health Studies office and the University of Pittsburgh, for her DM Thesis. She received her postgraduate certificate at her graduation ceremony at UWI St. Augustine on 25th October 2025.

The American Heart Association has published an excellent summary comparing Cardiac Arrest and Heart Attack.

Cardiac Arrest is an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) that occurs when the ventricle suddenly stops beating (asystole) or fibrillates (ventricular fibrillation). It is fatal if the patient does not receive immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

A Heart Attack (myocardial infarction) is sudden damage (infarction) of the heart muscle (myocardium) caused by occlusion of a coronary artery. Treatment is urgent hospitalisation to re-open the blocked artery with drugs (thrombolysis) or stents (coronary angioplasty / PCI).

Fourth in our โ€œ๐†๐ž๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐Š๐ง๐จ๐ฐ ๐Ž๐ฎ๐ซ ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ฌโ€ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ is Dr. Ekene Kenneth Okonkwo - a Consultant Cardiologist at Premier Heart Care Ltd with a special interest in Cardiac Imaging, Echocardiography, Cardiac CT and Nuclear Cardiology.

Dr. Okonkwo is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria and a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCP UK). He has worked in Trinidad and Tobago as a Registrar in Internal Medicine and acted as a Senior Medical Officer at the Eastern Regional Health Authority.

He completed a two-year International Cardiology Fellowship Training through the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh, a Postgraduate Diploma in Cardiology with the Middlesex University and an MSc in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of South Wales.

He subsequently attained sub-specialty training and accreditation in Echocardiography and Cardiac Computed Tomography and worked as a Cardiologist at the University Hospitals Morecambe Bay, UK. He is an accredited medical educator holding the prestigious Member, Academy of Medical Educators (MACadMed) qualification and currently lectures in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of South Wales

On June 24th, AVENTA (Novartis) hosted an insightful evening featuring two team members from Premier Heart Care Ltd: Dr. Clifford Thomas, who shared his expertise on the management of heart failure and Dr. Martina Rodriguez, who explored therapies for preventing and treating cardiovascular disease due to high cholesterol.

Congratulations to Dr. Shervelle Fouchรฉ, who just began her internship. Years ago, she did a medical school elective under my supervision and afterwards volunteered at our Premier Heart Care Ltd office - observing everything from cardiology consults to ECGs, echos, stress tests and even angiography.

Yesterday, she stopped by just to say โ€œthank youโ€ - and honestly, she made my day!

During a Trans-esophageal echo (TEE), the sensor (transducer) is placed in the esophagus behind the heart. The sensor sends and receives sound waves that produce high quality images of the heart.
TEE is useful in evaluating:
1. Congenital heart disease.
2. Aortic dissection.
3. Aneurysms of the aorta.
4. Valvular heart disease.
5. Infective endocarditis.
6. Cardiac tumors
7. Stroke due to Thromboembolism
