To kick off the of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, we are sharing ICM’s statement on understanding, naming, and addressing obstetric violence.

Every woman deserves childbirth free from mistreatment, abuse, and neglect. Obstetric violence is a serious human rights violation and a form of gender-based violence - and it must end.

Midwives, healthcare professionals, educators, and policymakers all have a role to play in creating respectful, woman-centred care that upholds dignity, ensures informed consent, and protects human rights.

✨This is one of the most important questions to ask when deciding if a birth centre is the right choice for your birth. “Low-risk” simply means that you and your baby are healthy, your tests are looking good, and there are no conditions that require hospital-based monitoring.

Your provider will look at things like your blood pressure, blood sugar, ultrasound results, placenta position, baby’s growth, and how you’ve been feeling overall. If everything is moving along smoothly, you may be a great candidate for a birth centre.

Choosing a birth environment that matches your pregnancy needs sets the foundation for a safe and empowering experience. Always check in with your provider and ask openly, “Based on my pregnancy so far, am I considered low-risk?”
