Fever grass tea vs Panadol...

Many of us grew up trusting traditional remedies passed down through generations — and they often bring comfort because they’re familiar. While some natural treatments can help with minor issues, they may not fully treat the cause of an illness.

Conventional medicine combines science, research, and proven treatments to not only relieve symptoms but also prevent complications and save lives. For example, while herbs may soothe a cough, antibiotics can cure a serious infection, and vaccines can stop diseases before they even start.

Another example: medication, like insulin is proven to protect your body from serious complications. While a bush tea might help you feel better for a moment, medication works at a deeper level to keep your blood sugar stable and prevent long-term harm.

Traditional practices can still play a role in overall wellness, but working with trained healthcare professionals ensures you get safe, effective care — giving you the best of both worlds: cultural tradition and modern protection for you and your family.

Lumps and bumps...

Subdermal (under skin) lumps are palpable masses beneath the skin that may arise from benign, infectious, or malignant causes. Common examples include lipomas, epidermoid/dermoid cysts, abscesses, enlarged lymph nodes, and less commonly, soft tissue sarcomas.

Clinical evaluation involves:
Detailed history
Physical examination.
Imaging (e.g. ultrasound)
Fine-needle aspiration or biopsy may be required for suspicious lesions.

Management depends on the underlying cause:

Benign lesions (e.g., lipomas, cysts): Often require no treatment unless symptomatic or cosmetically concerning; surgical excision may be performed.

Infectious/inflammatory lumps (e.g., abscesses): Managed with incision and drainage, sometimes antibiotics.

Suspicious or malignant lesions: Require biopsy, referral to a specialist (e.g., surgical oncology), and appropriate oncologic management.

Key principle: Any rapidly growing, hard, fixed, or irregular lump, especially with systemic symptoms (fever, weight loss, night sweats), warrants urgent evaluation to exclude malignancy.

An abscess or boil is a localized collection of pus that forms in response to an infection. The pus is composed of dead white blood cells, bacteria, and other debris from the body’s immune response to fight off the infection.

Some Common Causes of Abscesses are:

Bacterial Infections
Blocked Glands or Hair Follicles
Acne
Eczema
Post Surgical Procedures
Injuries

If an abscess/boil is not treated with properly, it can lead to recurrence or sepsis.

IMPORTANT!! Do not attempt to drain an abscess yourself. You can introduce more dangerous bacteria and make it worse!

Our Consultant General Surgeon can treat such issues with thorough abscess drainage and post-op antibiotics if the abscess is too large, painful, or is spreading into surrounding tissue (cellulitis).

Book your appointment for an official assessment by our licensed, experienced healthcare specialist today!
