Baby elephants are among the most emotionally complex animals on Earth, and their grief can be powerful enough to threaten their survival. In Kenya, wildlife sanctuaries such as the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust rescue calves that lost their mothers to poaching, conflict, or natural causes. These young elephants cry, shiver, and refuse to sleep when left alone, and many stop eating from overwhelming stress.

To keep them alive, human caregivers take on the role of constant companions. They sleep on mats beside each calf during the night, talk softly to them when they wake trembling, and stay close until the babies learn they are safe again. This nightly comfort helps stabilise their stress levels, rebuild their trust, and give them the emotional security they would have received from their mothers.

This rescue work continues for years until each elephant is strong enough to return to the wild.
