INSIDE THE CLINIC | Functional Hand Rehab

After a broken arm and surgery, grip strength and hand control can be significantly affected.

In this session, we’re using a simulated food-serving activity to work on: • Tong control
• Grasp and release
• Grip strength
• Functional hand use during meaningful tasks

This approach supports occupational engagement by building rehab around activities the client can relate to and participate in with purpose.

Recovery is not just about isolated exercise — it’s about improving the skills needed for everyday life.

By practicing client-preferred, functional tasks, we help restore confidence, coordination, and independence one movement at a time.

📍At Total Rehab, rehabilitation is always goal-directed and tailored to the individual.

Managing patellar tendon pain requires the right load, progression, and control.

In this session, we’re using our adjustable weights to progressively load the tendon — a key part of evidence-based rehab for patella tendinopathy.

Our focus:
• Controlled loading of the tendon
• Strength through pain-free ranges (or tolerable levels)
• Gradual progression to build capacity
• Restoring function for daily activity and sport

Tendons respond to consistent, progressive loading — not rest alone.

The goal isn’t just to reduce pain, but to rebuild strength and resilience so you can move with confidence again.

📍If you’re dealing with knee pain, let’s structure your rehab the right way.

“Before you return to the court… your knee has to prove it’s ready.”

Returning to sports like tennis or pickleball requires more than just feeling better.

Athletes must demonstrate:
• Strength symmetry
• Dynamic knee stability
• Controlled change of direction
• Sport-specific endurance

These drills prepare the body for the demands of competition while reducing the risk of reinjury.

Rehab doesn’t end when pain stops — it ends when the body is ready.

📍If you're returning to sport after injury, make sure your recovery includes proper performance testing.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week

March 8–14 marks Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week, highlighting the important role rehabilitation plays in helping individuals recover from respiratory illness and improve overall lung function.

In this video, Dr. Carla Rauseo demonstrates the use of an incentive spirometer, a simple but effective tool used to help patients practice deep breathing and expand the lungs.

This technique can help: • Improve breathing efficiency
• Prevent post-surgical lung complications
• Support recovery after respiratory illness
• Restore lung capacity and endurance

Small, guided breathing exercises like this can play an important role in rebuilding respiratory strength and supporting recovery.

📍If you’ve experienced surgery, illness, or breathing difficulties, pulmonary rehabilitation strategies can help restore confidence and function.

This athlete is 3 weeks post ACL reconstruction.
At this stage, priorities include:
• Restoring full knee extension
• Re-activating the quadriceps
• Controlling swelling
• Protecting the graft

We are not rushing.

We are progressing within early-stage precautions.

Return to sport starts with respecting biology and following criteria — not timelines alone.
ACL recovery is a structured process.

📍If you’re recovering from ACL surgery, make sure your rehab is guided and progressive.

INSIDE THE CLINIC | Blood Flow Restriction Training
After knee surgery, patients often cannot lift heavy loads — but strength loss still needs to be addressed.

That’s where Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) comes in.

BFR allows us to:
• Use lighter loads
• Stimulate muscle growth
• Minimize joint stress
• Protect healing tissue

In early ACL rehab, this is a powerful tool when heavy strength training isn’t yet appropriate.

Rehab progression is about applying the right load at the right time.

📍Ask us if BFR is appropriate for your stage of recovery.

INSIDE THE CLINIC | ACL Rehab

After ACL reconstruction, the brain often inhibits the quadriceps — a protective response known as atherogenic muscle inhibition.

If the quad doesn’t fire properly:
• Knee extension is limited
• Gait becomes altered
• The graft is less protected

Early-stage rehab focuses on restoring full extension and reactivating the quad safely within surgical precautions.

This phase is not about intensity — it’s about precision.
If you’ve recently had ACL surgery, proper early rehab makes all the difference.

📍Book an assessment and start strong from week one.
