What is LEUKEMIA and how to prevent it?
LEUKEMIA is a type of cancer in the blood in which the bone marrow and other blood-forming cells are inconsistent and become cancerous. The cancer cells grow and cover the normal cells such as the red blood cells and platelets.
Common Signs and Symptoms:
1) Night sweats
2) Unexplained fever
3) Weight loss
4) Fatigue and weakness
5) Swollen lymph nodes
6) Enlarged liver or spleen
7) Bone or joint pain
8) Bleeding from the gums, nose, or red spots under the skin
9) Becoming anemic due to fewer healthy white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets
If you have signs or symptoms that suggest leukemia, you may consult a doctor or do a CBC with peripheral smear. It may be used to help discover if the patient has leukemia.
Causes:
1) Genetic - Genetic abnormalities seem to play a role in the development of leukemia.
2) Radiation - Exposure to X-rays, CT Scan, MRI and other radiation.
3) Chemicals - Exposure to certain chemicals, such as benzene which is found in gasoline and is used by the chemical industry.
4) Smoking - Smoking ci******es increases the risk of acute myelogenous leukemia.
Treatment:
Common treatments for Leukemia are chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant and stem cell transplant. There is no assurance that leukemia will be cured by this methods. Hematologists should examine leukemia patients.
Prevention:
