[IFMSA EBTO Time]
Ep.6 - Batool Wahdani (Jordan), President of IFMSA 2018 - 19
1️⃣ What was the most impressive experience during your term of office?
I was impressed by how passionate people are about IFMSA, and how they benefit the organization as well as how they benefit from it. When seeking for the potential of IFMSA members, you can truly discover enthusiasm, and I always felt inspired when I see so many people get back to IFMSA to share their perspectives. The federation is sustainable and is sustained by the passion of the members.
2️⃣ What characteristic is the most important to compete for this position?
I don’t think the characteristics that I value are from myself, but are given by IFMSA and the experiences these years I overcame. I am able to be one of the leaders of the organization, because I have learned so many things during different kinds of experiences the organization gave me.
Being patient, managing with stress, time, and team, and loving the organization are all necessities. You have to love the job. Seeing that this is a voluntary job, you should believe in the mission of the organization to be motivated.
3️⃣ I watched your speech in UNITED NATION, which was about social engagement of the youth. You also mentioned the problems we are facing: s*x work, the marginalized, hunger, the uneducated, and the unemployed; the speech impressed me a lot. Regarding the topic of the uneducated, we are living in a world dominated by capitalism, in which the value of free trade is upheld; nevertheless, free trade is one of the reasons that exacerbates the wealth gap, and therefore causes the inequity of educational resources. As you discussed the equality of educational resources in your speech, we would like to know how we could ensure the equality in education, while the freedom of trade is as well implemented. Or are there any methods that can directly safeguard the equality in education?
I think the utilization of resources is the most important thing here. We are not gonna change the situation of capitalism and wealth gap, but you can see the highly educated are there to engage in the improvement of the situation in every region.
Developed countries may have a higher rate of education, so the young generation is able to implement active citizenship in order to better this situation. Education is also not directly related to the resources, and should be provided for free and for all; especially in a poor country. Some countries implement compulsory education to 16 years old, but I think it is not enough; everyone should be able to get a degree and keep learning until they are independent in their lives.
4️⃣ What do you think of the situation people receiving health care?
One thing IFMSA emphasizes is “Universal Health Coverage”, which is deemed as one of the human rights. There is still a large group of people who couldn’t receive proper health care in the world we are living in today. I think it is a big issue we are faced with and is not formed merely because of the financial background of people. What’s more, health care is much more complicated than just statistics and math, and should be invested in everyone instead of a small group of people who are thought to be conductive. As medical students, we should carry on the issue and start to work on marginal regions to reach equality in health care.
