Genes Behind Dog Behaviors Also Shape Human Emotions
New research mapping the genomes of over a thousand golden retrievers reveals that many traits owners notice—such as trainability, fearfulness, and aggression—are influenced by genes that also shape human emotional and cognitive traits.
By comparing canine genetic data with large human datasets, scientists identified 12 shared genes tied to behaviors across both species.
Several of these genes relate to emotional sensitivity, anxiety, and stress reactivity, helping explain why some dogs are naturally more anxious or reactive than others.
These insights may help owners tailor training and care while opening new avenues for veterinary and psychiatric research.
