▌Structural Adjustment: A New Tool – Kinesiology Tape
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views human structural problems and internal diseases through a detailed conceptual framework of the five layers: skin (皮), vessels (脈), muscle (肉), sinews/fascia (筋), and bone (骨).
What is the "Skin Layer" (皮部)? The "skin layer" encompasses the entire body's skin, sweat pores, and the underlying microvessels. It serves as the body's first line of defense and the shallowest exit point for the meridian system on the body surface. When you are exposed to wind or under great pressure, changes in your skin (such as color, raised veins, or temperature to the touch) provide crucial clues for diagnosing the condition of your internal meridians and organs.
➤ TCM has long understood how to treat diseases by addressing the "skin layer," utilizing methods like cupping, gua sha, and bloodletting.
1. Kinesiology Tape: The Advantages for Structural Adjustment Kinesiology Tape (K-Tape) contains no medicinal ingredients. It relies on its unique elasticity, tension, and recoil to achieve its effects. In the hands of a TCM practitioner skilled in its use, K-Tape offers the following advantages for structural adjustment:
2. "Opening the Drain" for Subcutaneous Circulation: K-Tape creates minor wrinkles on the skin, gently lifting it. This action creates more space for the circulation of Qi and blood (氣血, qì xuè) and lymphatic fluid beneath the skin. It works like "opening a drainage system" to reduce swelling, dissipate bruising, and accelerate the removal of inflammatory substances and metabolic waste, increasing fascial glide and promoting faster recovery.
3. entle Correction of Structural Force Lines: The tape's recoil guides the direction of muscle and fascia contraction, assisting in correcting improper habits of muscle engagement and posture.
4. Direct Treatment for Areas Risky for Traditional Acupuncture: These areas include the head, face, neck, and chest. I have dedicated significant effort to treating conditions involving the head, face, and sensory organs (wǔ guān). Patients often suffer from abnormal tension in the head and neck. K-Tape is an exceptionally useful and safe tool to assist in resolving many difficult cases, such as: a.)Trigeminal neuralgia caused by a brain tumor, leading to difficulty opening the mouth; b.)Trismus after radiation therapy for oral cancer; c.) Trigeminal neurovascular compression; d.) Patients with esophageal; d.) Achalasia; e.) extremely high, difficult-to-control intraocular pressure; f.) Tourette Syndrome... and more. The suffering of patients is often the driving force for me to continually seek better treatments and tools. K-Tape is one of them.
5. Flexible and Continuous Line of Force: Compared to the fixed, static pressure of traditional cupping, K-Tape is more flexible in its application. It can be stretched to create a more continuous line of force, achieving precise, detailed, and rapid structural adjustments.
6. A Gentler Option for the "Needle-Phobic" Patients
7. Extending Treatment at Home: With proper guidance, K-Tape can remain adhered for several days, allowing patients to continue the therapeutic effect at home.
➤ The Crucial Next Step: Movement Re-education
However, treatments like acupuncture, cupping, bloodletting, or K-Tape tension adjustment are only the first step. The physician helps create a physical environment conducive to recovery from injury and pain. If the patient does not actively participate in "movement re-education," the pain often becomes chronic and recurrent. The treatment may provide improvement, but after a period of returning to the same movement patterns, the pain resurfaces.
This is why I have been actively pursuing further study this year. I look forward to completing this important puzzle piece in the future, assisting and accompanying patients on the path to true recovery.
