[Topic] Learning through My Professional Career: From Studying Deindustrialization in the U.S. to Focusing on the Labor Market Conditions of Taiwanese Workers
[Speaker] Chang Chin-Fen (Adjunct Research Fellow, Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica)
[Host] Chen, Chih-Jou Jay (Director, Research Fellow, Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica)
[Venue] 8F, Room802, Institute of Sociology, South Wing, Humanities and Social Sciences Building, Academia Sinica
My professional career as a sociologist began with a doctoral dissertation studying the economic compensation of manufacturing workers in the United States under the context of deindustrialization. After becoming a sociological researcher in Taiwan, inspired by various sociological and feminist theories, having access to diverse survey data and the advanced statistical methods and software, the research focus shifted toward the labor market conditions of Taiwanese workers and gender differences.
Align with the findings of both international and Taiwanese studies, the speaker’s research suggests that the difficulties women facing in the labor market primarily are results of gender inequality in the division of labor within the private sphere. This factor—together with unfriendly workplace conditions such as stagnant wage growth, long working hours, and sexual harassment—contributes to the especially low labor force participation rate among middle-aged and older women in Taiwan comparing to other countries.
The devaluation of feminine skills and gender-specific characteristics in the workplace and the persistence of unequal pay for work of equal value have made it difficult to significantly reduce the gender wage gap. The speaker believes that empirical research is not only about presenting findings and telling stories, but more about uncovering the mechanisms underlying social inequality. From the perspective of public sociology, the speaker wishes research results to help improve the working conditions of women and ordinary workers in Taiwan.
