A 7-day old baby was brought in by first-time mother “Anny,” who reported the baby had a recurring low-grade fever, mostly at night. During the assessment, the doctor noticed some discharge from the umbilical cord and a slightly distended abdomen. When asked to breastfeed the baby, it became apparent that Anny needed some guidance. A nurse gently worked with the new mom on good breastfeeding practices, and how to treat the umbilical cord infection. Three days later, Anny called and reported good progress.

Jambo Jambo Dashir-Kikwe friends!
As you may have heard, we had some post-election unrest in Tanzania - a big shock for our famously peaceful Tanzanian people. Fortunately, the protests were temporary (five days) and isolated to the big cities. Life is basically back to normal now.
At Dashir, in our rural Kikwe village, there were no issues, and we are well! Except for one day, we continued to open and offer our services throughout.
Stay tuned for more patient stories, and exciting news about what is coming up!

Last Saturday, we held another community "D.C." - aka dental clinic. Seven dentists and 18 Dashir staff, medical and non-medical, provided great service, and all of them deserve medals. There were 267 patients, including almost 100 secondary students. Over 160 people received treatment, such as fillings and over 100 extractions. We figure about 40% of the patients walked away with life-changing immediate relief (some were suffering every day for up to two years!).
We plan to start weekly dental services very soon, and hope to bring timely relief and healing and preventive advice to many more people, pole pole, slowly slowly.

We are happy to report that we had another busy and successful "D. C." yesterday (yes Gloria, more suspense). More to come once we've tallied the numbers and collected some stories.
And tomorrow comes the "A" reveal. :)

Jambo Jambo everyone, on this beautiful sunny day in Tanzania.
Something special is happening right now at Dashir-Kikwe Health Centre, and I'm not referring to the stunning, clear view of the "bundt-cake-icing" peak of Mount Kilimanjaro! Stay tuned.

Baby Briget's mother Jesca agreed to give a short, unprompted, candid testimonial for our donors. Our Tz staff member did the video - I try to keep my cell phone in my pocket when I walk through the clinic.
Enjoy! And apologies for the bad sound, but the captions should cover for that. :)

Good day everyone. It's still cool in Tanzania! At +18C (64F) and with heavy clouds, many are wearing tuques in the morning.
Pictured here is 5 month old Briget. She was brought in by her mother due to an illness. The process from reception to consultation to medicine took about 30 minutes only. If a lab test was needed, that would add about 30 minutes.

After announcing ultrasound services with a car speaker for the past two weeks, older men are coming "out of the woodwork"!
“John,” a 56 year old from Kikwe, came this past Tuesday. He presented with swollen lower legs, facial swelling, and slight abdominal enlargement. John visited another facility several times, but received an improper diagnosis. An ultrasound was done and he was diagnosed with an enlarged spleen and an enlarged liver. John was sent for further management at a secondary care facility the next day.

Yesterday we had 37 patients, a new record, with 14 ultrasound investigations. We aren’t proud about a big number, but we are proud about creating a positive environment for Kikwe folk to feel comfortable and safe to come with their health concerns.
Guess the total patient fee received for the day? - consultations, lab tests, ultrasounds, and medicine were just under $300 CAD! - less than $10 per patient, which is affordable in our community. Keeping the fees low is an important role that many of you play, as part of our monthly operations care team of donors. Asante sana. We are grateful.
Stay tuned for several patient stories coming soon.
