Dashir Cares

Dashir Cares Our objective is to provide accessible, quality, primary healthcare in rural Tanzania, with a focus on mothers, children, and the elderly.

21/02/2026

Every April and May, during the long rainy season, the dry riverbed that divides Dashir from the village centre is full of water much of the time. This makes our health centre inaccessible to many people coming on foot, unless they can wade through the water - NOT a good idea for the elderly, sick, young children, and pregnant moms. Now they have access all year, and so do the children attending school who are living on the Dashir side.
The appreciation for this project in our community is palpable. Kudos to Elisante and his proud construction team, together with some village volunteers, for making it happen. And thanks to YOU, our faithful supporters, for giving and standing with us, together in health and hope. πŸ«±πŸ»β€πŸ«²πŸΌ

Jambo Jambo! A new infrastructure project is happening, recently requested by the Kikwe community. In a month or so, this will be crucial for the daily health of many villagers. Can you guess why?
45 patients today! The RCH* mother-child clinic is growing; love the focus on preventative health. Tuesdays and Fridays are RCH days (*Reproductive Child Health).

Antony, a 4 year old boy, was recently brought in by his parents. He had blood in his urine and extreme pain in his abdomen. The parents reported a similar complaint a couple of days earlier, but ignored it and thought it would go away.
A urine analysis showed many bacteria. An abdominal ultrasound was performed, showing swollen bladder walls as the possible cause for blood in the urine, suggesting a severe infection.
Antony underwent a 5-day IV treatment, after which he regained normal urine frequency, with no blood in the urine and no more pain.
He was scheduled to return for a follow up after one week. The parents were advised on early pro-active intervention for such an issue.

16 year old Samwel, from a nearby school, came in with diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. He looked very ill, dehydrated and with high fever.
Lab tests were performed, which showed an infection in Samwel’s stomach. He was treated, put on oral medication, and counselled on personal hygiene, safe water use, and good sanitation.
Samwel left with a smile on his face. :)

MAJI YA KUNYWA TU - DRINKING WATER ONLY
Here is the system installed at the secondary school, ready when students came for their first day this Tuesday. Over 1200 secondary students and over 400 primary students, along with dozens of teachers, now have access to this gift of health and hope in Kikwe, every day. We are grateful for your support to make this possible.

P.S. Normally, we do not want a donor billboard on any of our projects, even at the health centre. However, with the local wisdom of Elisante, there are good reasons to do so for this project.

Mary, a 28 year old, came the other day for treatment after a prolonged monthly cycle where she experienced heavy and painful cycles for over 9 months. After a thorough history and examination, she was advised to get an ultrasound. The issue causing the bad symptoms was seen, and Mary received a simple procedure to correct the problem. We anticipate she will soon have much pain relief and experience a normal monthly cycle.

Happy New Year! Hope you are doing well.
Only three days into the year, Elisante and crew are already installing the drinking water filtration systems - one at the primary school (pictured here) and one at the secondary school (before the teachers and students arrive). It's pretty cool to provide over 1000 Kikwe students with the newest state of the art technology, with 10 separate filters/UV light, even taking out the harmful amount of fluoride in the water which comes from Mount Meru.
And thanks so much for all the lovely donations in the Establishing Hope Campaign, now at CAD $135,426. We'll continue raising funds in the next six months, and hope to reach our $280,000 goal in order to complete the 8 vital projects on the docket. The first one is almost complete!

Colins, a 21 day-old boy, was brought in by his young mother. He had complaints of difficulty breathing and excessive crying, presenting with low fever and discomfort. After a chest assessment, Colins was diagnosed with a severe respiratory infection and put on treatment.
From our nurse, the mother received advice about good child care and breastfeeding, and was encouraged to attend our antenatal clinic for regular follow up and learning.

This week, 20 year old Maria was brought in by her mother, very worried, saying that her daughter had a very bad night, with sweating, dizziness, headache, and vomiting.

After testing, a UTI was found, blood levels were low, AND a pregnancy test came back positive, of which Maria was unaware.
She was put on treatment, including, supplements to raise her Haemoglobin levels, and encouraged to attend our Antenatal Clinic as soon as possible.

This kind of situation is not uncommon. Without timely and proper intervention, a young pregnant mom's health can deteriorate quickly and put both lives at risk.
