Medical Stores Department (MSD) was established by the Act of Parliament No.13 of 1993 as an autonomous department under the Ministry of Health, responsible for developing, maintaining and managing an efficient and cost effective system of procurement, storage and distribution of approved medicines and medical supplies required for use by the public health services as the Ministry of Health may from time to time approve. Board of Trustees is the highest decision-making body that governs and set the directions of MSD on behalf of the Minister for Health, The Board composed of nine(9) members appointed every three years. The Chairman appointed by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, eight (8) members are appointed by the Minister responsible for health.The Board is comprising of a multidisciplinary team including eminent public servants, scientists, practicing medical doctors, lawyers, accountants, professors and renowned economists. To implement its responsibilities the Board operates through three committees namely; Audit and Risk Management Committee that provides the management with accurate information on the effectiveness of risk management and internal controls including regulatory compliance by the Department; Technical Services Committee that handles all matters related to quality of medicines and medical supplies together with management expired medicines. Finance and Administration Committee tha is mandated in handling all matters related to MSD Financial Management, Human Resources Management and Administrative functions of the Department. The Board delegates the day to day management of the department operations to Director General who is appointed by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania. The administrative functions and operations of Department are carried by and through the Executive Management Team (EMT).The EMT is constituted by the Director General, Director of Human Resources and Administration, Director of Finance and Planning, Director of Logistics, Director of Procurement, Director of Information and Communication Technology, Director of Customer Service and Zonal Operations as well as Chief Legal Counsel. The departnment operates through eight zonal stores in Dar-es-salaam, Mwanza, Iringa,Moshi,Mbeya,Tabora, Dodoma and Mtwara suppoted by two Sales Points in Tanga and Muleba.
