Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)

Pre-implantation diagnosis (PGD) makes it possible to detect the presence of possible genetic or chromosomal abnormalities in embryos conceived after in vitro fertilization. The goal is to differentiate embryos with a genetic disease from those that are healthy. For this, one to two cells are taken from the embryo on the third or fifth day of development. The genetic material is then analyzed by PCR or fluorescence in situ hybridization techniques to select embryos which will be transferred into the uterus of the future mother. PGD usually takes 1 week for 5 or 9 chromosomes tests.

PGD is used primarily for
🔴genetic disease prevention, by selecting only those embryos that do not have a known genetic disorder.
🔴increasing chances of successful pregnancy
🔴matching a sibling in HLA type in order to be a donor
🔴having less cancer predisposition
🔴sex selection
