Raspberries were grown by the ancient Romans. Pliny the Elder, a Roman historian and writer, discovered huge thickets of wild raspberries on the island of Crete and gave this plant the Latin name Rubus Idaeus. In Roman mythology, there is even a myth that explains the red color of raspberries. According to the legend, raspberry berries used to be white, but when Princess Ida was picking raspberries for her baby, she injured her hand on sharp thorns and sprinkled the fruit with her blood, since then the raspberry berries got their red color.
