👣 Something is afoot… 👣

Can you determine what it is from the clues in this image?

Histology is from the microscope of forensic pathologist on Instagram.

The image shows the duct system of the mammary gland surrounded by dense irregular connective tissue (pink) and fat (adipocytes appear as white spaces in histology). This particular region of the duct system does not look healthy, it has the appearance of a type of non-invasive breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). ‘Ductal’ refers to the fact that the tumor is located in the duct system of the mammary gland; ‘carcinoma’ is the term used to describe a tumor that originates from epithelial cells (the glands in the breast develop normally as an in-folding of the epithelium covering our body - epidermis); and ‘in situ’ just means that the tumor is in its original place, it hasn’t moved beyond the confines of the duct system into the surrounding pink connective tissue, fat or beyond.

DCIS is not life threatening but may may recur after it is removed (lumpectomy) and a diagnosis may be associated with a slightly increased risk of developing a more invasive carcinoma later on in life than someone who has not received a DCIS diagnosis in the past.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 60,000 cases of DCIS are diagnosed in the USA each year. That’s a high number but there are perhaps some good reasons for it:

- People are living much longer lives! As we grow older, our risk of developing breast cancer (and many other diseases) increases

- More people are getting mammograms, and the technology has improved making screening better, which uncovers more cases earlier!

So this little foot is a good reminder to take the regularly ‘steps’ necessary to monitor your health. Examine your own breast tissue regularly and if you feel anything unusual be sure to get your doctor to check it out.

💍👁️ One phase to rule them all 👁️💍

A mitotic spindle binds them

One phase to bring them in

And along the equator align them

This image shows a cell in the process of dividing by mitosis.

Metaphase is a stage of mitosis in the eukaryotic cell where the genetic material of the cell, organized into chromosome pairs, aligns along the equator of the cell (the dark slit-like pupil). The pairs contain a chromosome and its exact copy. After aligning, the pairs will be pulled apart by microtubule spindles (the pink radiating fibers to the left and right of the chromosomes) and the cell will physically divide to form two genetically identical daughter cells, each with the same number of chromosome as the parent cell prior to its entry into mitosis
