National Medical Stores, Uganda The National Medical Stores (NMS) is an autonomous government Corporation established by the National Advisory role of the corporation.

The Objectives of the NMS corporation are:
1) the efficient and economical procurement of medicines and of certain other medical supplies of good quality primarily to the public health services;
2) the secure, safe and efficient storage, administration, distribution and supply of the goods, having regard to national needs and to the special nature of the goods in question in accordance with the
national drug policy and the national drug authority;
3)the establishment and maintenance of systems to ensure the quality of goods supplied;
the estimation of current and future needs as a basis for procurement planning and for budgeting by the corporation itself and the Ministries concerned;
4)the proper performance of additional tasks as may be accepted by the board as complementary or necessary to the performance of its primary functions, and are entrusted to the corporation by regulation.
5. The corporation shall advise the National Drug Authority, and the National Drug Authority shall advise the Ministry responsible for health, the Ministry responsible for finance, planning and economic development and the Ministry responsible for local government either on request or at the board’s own initiative on essential issues relating to the state of the corporation and its future development, as well as to related matters, including the estimation of drug needs and the distribution and use of medicines in the public health service.

National Medical Stores receives 175,200 COVID-19 Vaccines

National Medical Stores (NMS) has today received 175,200 COVID-19 vaccines from the Ministry of Health. The AstraZeneca vaccines will be stored at the NMS headquarters in Entebbe. NMS’ mandate is to procure, store and deliver drugs mainly to public health facilities. The Minister of Health Dr Ruth Aceng received the vaccines from the donors - the French government represented by Ambassador Jules-Armand before handing over the consignment to NMS at the NMS HeadQuarters.

The vaccines were delivered by a KLM flight which landed at Entebbe International Airport at 10:00pm.
This is the third consignment of COVID-19 vaccines to be received, stored and distributed by the NMS since March 2021.

The National Medical Stores (NMS) this week hosted a team from the Inspectorate of Government to create awareness about its operations, challenges faced in executing its mandate and establishing a working partnership with the institution.

While addressing the Inspectorate’s representatives, NMS General Manager Moses Kamabare noted that while NMS fulfills its mandate of delivering medicines and medical supplies to the public health facilities, some individuals in charge of the supplies at the health facilities hoard the supplies with hopes of selling them illegally.

The Inspectorate of Government team comprising of Director Leadership Code, Annet Twine, Manager Strategic Partnerships and Public Relations- Munira Ali, Manager Verifications, Amos Baguma and Senior Inspectorate Officer, Pauline Nansamba expressed appreciation of the information shared with them and promised to support the store in ensuring availability of medical supplies especially in the regional health centers.

The Inspectorate Manager Strategic Partnerships and Public Relations - Munira Ali called for a partnership between the Inspectorate and NMS to hold recipients of the medical supplies to account.

NMS Uganda this Thursday held a ceremony to mark the end of the mosquito net distribution project. More than 27 million mosquito nets have been distributed to combat malaria. Assistant Commissioner in charge of the National Malaria Control Division, Dr Jimmy Opigo said: ‘We need to believe in ourselves. We can do great things.
