Patient profile:
Recently, as Dr. Rinah was making rounds with the other young doctors in training, they came across a young girl with sickle cell disease - a disorder of the red blood cells resulting in severe pain and serious complications. Unfortunately, the young girl was abandoned by her mother at just two years of age due to her medical condition, and the father - who had three other wives - was not interested in caring for her either. Her grandmother stepped in to care for her and did so until she succumbed to old age 3 years ago. Since then, the young girl has been moving from one relatives house to another with no stable place to call home.
She was brought into the hospital by a stepsister due to severe pain from her condition, however the stepsister had other children to care for and had to leave her on her own. To make matters worse, the family was not able to afford basic necessities for the hospital stay such as medication for pain, or even food (these are not automatically provided as they are in American hospitals). Dr. Rinah had compassion on this family and gave them money to buy food. But when she returned that evening, they were gone.
We probably won’t ever know the ending to the young girls heart wrenching story, but it’s an apt reminder of the reason a free clinic in Uganda is so desperately needed. Thanks for walking with us as we work towards this goal!
