WHAT CAN BE DONE TO PREVENT UNSAFE ABORTION AND ITS RELATED CONSEQUENCES?

Unsafe abortion is entirely preventable, yet, each year between 4.7% – 13.2% of maternal deaths can be attributed to unsafe abortion according to World Health Organization. Abortion can be either induced abortion or spontaneous abortion. Spontaneous abortion may occur for several reasons (check recent posts about spontaneous abortion) some of which can be addressed promptly by a health worker to reduce the risk or prevent worse outcomes.

Induced abortion of the other hand is out of one’s willingness to terminate pregnancy either on medical backgrounds or personal factors such as unwanted pregnancy, fear and intimidation, fear of shame, fear for lost dreams, harassment by caregivers etc.

In a country such as Uganda where we are still grappling with high rates of teenage pregnancy, most young girls end up opting for abortion due to fear, shame and stigma. Unfortunately, most girls carry out abortion on their own without any medical assistance hence suffer very many complications including death.

Abortions are safe is they are carried out by a person with necessary skills using a World Health Organization recommended method that is appropriate to the duration of the pregnancy. Because they fear to be judged, these teenage pregnant girls do not seek the services of a skilled personnel, but rather sometimes buy over the counter drugs and use herbs or instruments to ease abortion. They get complications during the process and still shun from hospital management consequently leading to death.

Complications from unsafe abortion may include incomplete abortion, heavy bleeding, infections, ge***al injuries and perforation of the womb/uterus during the process of inserting instruments. All these could lead to death of adolescents and women.

Share your thoughts about what we can all do to prevent unsafe abortion? What do you think can be done to save our young girls and women from avoidable death?

Adopt a healthy lifestyle to lower cardiovascular disease risks.
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading causes of death globally and contributed to 32% of all deaths globally in 2019 according to the World Health Organization. Stroke and heart attack contribute to the majority of deaths and more deaths are also reported in lower- and middle-income countries. Many young people are increasingly becoming victims of cardiovascular diseases for a number of reasons associated to lifestyle. While we mark the world heart day, we wish to remind you to adopt healthy lifestyles in order to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Here are a few tips:
• Do moderate (not strenuous) exercises regularly. Regular/Consistent exercises for about 30 minutes daily keep you fit and your heart healthy. Those morning and evening jog, stretches and jumps are not just for short-term benefits but they go a long way to make your life better and healthy.

• Eat a healthy diet. A healthy diet to lower risks of heart and related diseases includes more fruits and vegetables and less of highly saturated fat and cholesterol (bad cholesterol). Eat less or avoid highly processed foods, junks, red meats, and prefer to go natural or unprocessed foods and more white meats such as fish and chicken. Fruits and veggies should be part of your plate daily.

• Avoid smoking and alcohol. Excessive consumption leads to high blood pressure and contributes to stroke and other heart disorders such as cardiomyopathy. Gradually cut down consumption and avoid intake of alcohol and smoking.

• Manage stress. Try to put your mind together and ease stress. When you are stressed, the fight and flight mode of the body is activated and your heart begins to race. Failure to manage stress may end up increasing your blood pressure and eventual cardiovascular disorders.

• Have adequate rest/sleep regularly. Sleep helps the body in many ways but not limited to relaxation of the entire body. Sleep helps in keeping you fit and positive, enhances detoxification and management of stress. Aim to have at least 8 hours of sleep daily.

• Have regular checkups. Good health begins with you. Your attitude and behavior dictate the health status of your body usually. So, try to adopt the habit of get screened for heart conditions and get expert knowledge on risk factors such that you prevent or detect any diseases earlier when it can be best handled.

• Manage your weight. Young people are obsessed about gaining weight. However, weight could be another huge risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Being over weight or obese can potentially risk you to heart and related diseases.

• Manage any other underlying disease. Diabetes and kidney diseases are closely related to heart disease. Many other common conditions such as syphilis, malaria, anemias, dental diseases, respiratory infections etc could contribute to heart disease in several ways. Get proper treatment when you suffer from a disease.

In commemoration of the world heart day, we stand with all people living any heart related condition. You are strong and courageous, keep fighting on and continue to adopt healthy lifestyles to boost resilience.

Q: Doctor, is a UTI a sexually transmitted disease?
A: No, a UTI is not a sexually transmitted disease. Read more👇

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a group of inflammations of the structures of the renal system i.e the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra.

UTIs are caused by several types of bacteria, and these organisms can be picked up from contaminated surfaces such as toilet seats or under-wears, then ascend through the urethra to the kidneys. But also, cleaning from the back to the front means facilitating gut bacteria from the a**s to find entry in the v***a and consequently the urethra (among females). Bacteria that may cause some STIs can also find entry in the urethra and cause UTIs but that does not make UTIs sexually transmitted.

The most experienced symptoms are lower abdominal pain, pain on passing urine, increased frequency to pass urine and changes in urine consistency and smell.

You can keep yourself safe from UTIs by ensuring proper hygiene of your toilets or under garments and practice safe sexual habits.

In case of a UTI, antibiotics and pain-killers will be very helpful but you need to stay very hydrated. You will also need to pass urine as long as you need to without hesitancy.

Get enough sleep of atleast 8hrs to help the body fight better. During sleep, the immune system release proteins called CYTOKINES that fight inflammation, infections and help to respond better to stress.
Poor sleep also means more stress hormones, CORTISOL in our bodies which delays recovery.
