We were honored to represent and at the 3rd Annual Global Mental Wellbeing & Substance (Mis)Use (GMWS 2025) Conference, organized by 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 (𝗡𝗔𝗖) in Charlottetown, , under the theme “𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁, 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀: 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲.”

Our is to transform access to and preventive using in the different . This conference was a powerful reminder of why that work matters, especially in the face of escalating .

Our Founder, Kawekwa Douglas Fur spoke on the theme “𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗠𝗶𝘀)𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀.” In this 15-minute presentation, we shared how climate-related stressors from extreme heat can escalate into risky coping strategies like substance use and how community-led, -supported can be a proactive response.

🤝 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵

We believe that is central to the and of every young person, like adolescent navigating and physical challenges. This week, I had the opportunity to meet with BUSUULWA CHARLES, Founder of SHE DESERVES UGANDA( ELL-ATHOLERE), to explore powerful synergies between our missions.

🌸 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗨𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 is doing remarkable work addressing and through natural pain relief products, digital and school outreach. As we spoke, one thing became clear: 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱, and both deserve equal attention.

Together, we discussed:
🔹 How MindLyfe’s digital platform can 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 support into She Deserves’ menstrual health programs
🔹 Leveraging 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘀 like WhatsApp and computer labs for private, stigma-free engagement with girls
🔹 Addressing 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗽𝘀 through joint efforts and strategic partnerships
🔹 Developing 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 to reach more adolescent girls where they are — digitally and emotionally

💻 With 1 in 4 Ugandans facing Mental Health challenges, it is urgent that we co-create solutions that are , , and 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.

𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮: 𝗔 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗿. 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻

We were honored to host a thought-provoking conversation with Paul Bolton from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, initiated by our Founder KAWEKWA Douglas. The session explored urgent and sustainable pathways to expand in and other Low & Middle Income Countries (LMICs).

Dr. Bolton shared that 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟴𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 at the community level. This highlights the power of 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸-𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲. He also challenged the current paradigm, advocating for global institutions to play a 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 & 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲. This aligns with MindLyfe Limited's ethos of local ownership and .

In preparation for this webinar, KESS members have actively participated in the Mental Health Survey developed by MindLyfe Limited. The survey aims to assess:

1. Academic workload and study habits

2. Stressors and coping strategies

3. Support awareness and help-seeking behaviors

4. General mental well-being through the GHQ-12 tool

The findings will inform tailored interventions and psychoeducational for students in the faculty.

We had the honor of meeting with WAR CHILD ALLIANCE - Africa & Colombia Region - a powerful organization dedicated to supporting and in conflict through evidence-based and interventions. Special thanks to Carmen Demeter and Nicholas Demeter from the Local4Dev Hub (L4D) for having introduced MindLyfe Limited to Silvia Illescas last year in December.

The meeting, attended by KAWEKWA Douglas (Founder, MindLyfe), Jimmy Okot, Dorothy Agoe, and Sylvia Illescas, focused on exploring opportunities to expand access to professional Mental Health care across .

At MindLyfe, we believe 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. Our mission is to dismantle stigma and deliver accessible, tech-driven therapy services to underserved communities, especially children, youth, and .

My deep gratitude to Sandra Waithaka from the Seedspot that today, I had the privilege of meeting with Kevin Gibbons, Executive Director of (HAC), and Costaritah Nalukwago, HAC Programs Manager, to explore collaborative efforts that can transform the delivery of services in remote .

Our discussion was both enlightening and urgent. We recognized that the community’s inability to afford necessary services calls for innovative and alternative financing solutions. Kevin shared his concerns about the limited and for Mental Health initiatives, especially in remote areas where the absence of social workers leaves vulnerable populations at risk. Costaritah highlighted critical missed opportunities for diagnosing Mental Health needs within existing structures and health facilities, revealing a significant gap that must be addressed.

We also delved into the disturbing realities of abandonment and suicidal ideations faced by children living with HIV in the communities HAC serves, underscoring the pressing need for robust . A major challenge remains the lack of trained workers in Mental Health; for example, Masaka Health Center IV has only one psychiatric nurse; recognition and are severely hampered.

At , we are committed to changing this narrative. I emphasized our approach to Mental Health - anchored in community engagement, innovative , and models. We discussed the critical need for companies to channel part of their budgets towards Mental Health initiatives, ensuring these services are both sustainable and far-reaching.

Kevin suggested that actionable, cost-free steps must be taken in the coming month or two to jump-start our collaboration. We agreed that without taking immediate action, our discussions risk becoming inaction. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲. We're excited to share highlights from our recent meeting with Kevin Gibbons, Executive Director of (HAC), and Costaritah Nalukwago, HAC Programs Manager. With over 11 years of dedicated service in , Kevin has led HAC in driving across 140 in 14 districts - a true testament to the power of impactful grassroots work.

During our conversation, we discussed several pressing challenges, including recent funding cuts from Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) that have unfortunately resulted in layoffs at HAC. These financial constraints underscore the urgent need for sustainable financing models to support critical services, especially in .

from MindLyfe Limited highlighted our innovative approach to , which combines engagement with cutting-edge . We explored how infrastructure and capacity building among local workers can bridge the gap in care for remote communities. Our discussion reaffirmed our shared commitment to overcoming resource constraints and enhancing healthcare accessibility.

The meeting concluded with exciting plans for collaborative outreach programs and efforts to secure additional financing. Together, we are determined to address the Mental Health needs of underserved communities and create lasting, positive change.
