FATTY LIVER ✨✨✨
Excessive fat in the liver can disrupt its function, leading to symptoms like fatigue, pain, and jaundice in advanced cases. Untreated, fatty liver can progress to more serious conditions such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, liver failure, and even liver cancer. Factors like obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol increase the risk, and while sometimes asymptomatic, fatty liver often leads to metabolic issues like insulin resistance.
Early Stage Effects:
Asymptomatic:
Fatty liver often has no obvious symptoms, especially in its early stages.
Fatigue and Weakness: Some people may experience general feelings of being unwell or tired.
Abdominal Discomfort:
Pain or discomfort in the upper right part of the abdomen is another potential symptom.
Advanced Stage Effects:
Inflammation:
Fat buildup can lead to inflammation and cell death (steatohepatitis).
Jaundice: A yellowing of the skin and eyes, which is a sign of bilirubin buildup.
Abdominal Swelling: Fluid can accumulate in the abdomen.
Increased Risk of Bleeding: In severe cases, the liver may become fragile and more prone to bleeding.
Cirrhosis:
This is a serious condition where the liver is scarred and damaged beyond repair.
Liver Failure: In critical stages, the liver can lose its ability to function, leading to liver failure.
Liver Cancer: Late-stage fatty liver disease increases the risk of liver cancer.
Metabolic Effects:
Insulin Resistance: High liver fat content is strongly linked to insulin resistance, a condition that can lead to type 2 diabetes.
Impaired Glucose Metabolism: Fatty liver can impair the liver's ability to regulate blood sugar.
Risk Factors:
Obesity
Diabetes
High cholesterol
Metabolic Syndrome
Alcohol consumption (for alcohol-related fatty liver disease)
