CONSTIPATION
Signs of constipation include passing fewer than three stools per week, having hard, dry, or lumpy stools, straining to have a bowel movement, feeling like you haven't fully emptied your bowels, and experiencing abdominal pain, fullness, or bloating
CONSTIPATION CAN LEAD TO COMPLICATIONS LIKE
Constipation can lead to complications like hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fecal impaction, and rectal prolapse due to straining. Other effects include physical discomfort, abdominal pain, bloating, loss of appetite, and fatigue. If left untreated, chronic constipation can also worsen underlying health issues or contribute to serious conditions like bowel obstruction.
Hemorrhoids:
Straining to pass hard stools can cause swollen veins in the rectum or anus.
Anal Fissures:
These are small tears in the tissue surrounding the anus, often resulting from the stretching of the sphincter muscle by hard, dry stool.
Fecal Impaction:
A large, hard mass of stool can become stuck in the colon or rectum, blocking the normal bowel movements and potentially causing diarrhea to leak around it.
Rectal Prolapse:
In some cases, long-term straining can cause a portion of the rectum to slip outside the anus.
Other Effects
Discomfort and Pain:
Constipation causes abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, and a general feeling of fullness.
Loss of Appetite:
The discomfort and feeling of fullness can reduce your appetite.
Fatigue:
A disrupted digestive system can lead to less efficient nutrient absorption and fatigue.
Poor Quality of Life:
The physical discomfort, bloating, and potential self-consciousness can negatively impact daily activities and mood.
