When to do a self breast exam. Timing is everything.
If you are still seeing your periods every month, thereโs a phase called Luteal Phase just after ovulation that would be after 14 days from the day you see a drop of blood.
During this time, your breast undergoes changes, itโs more lumpy, sometimes a bit painful and feels full(engorged) in some women, the hormone called progesterone causes these changes.
3-5 days after your periods, the levels decrease and breast tissue becomes less dense. This is the best time to do a self breast exam. Thereโs programed cell death in preparation for another cycle(apoptosis) this is when you do it. Not before this time because you can easily think youโre feeling a lump yet itโs normal breast tissue. Stick to the best time of the month.
Pregnant women and those breast feeding can still do this physical exam at home but itโs tricky since their breasts undergo changes, your breasts respond to hormonal changes. Do it anyway, but, when you go for antenatal visit ask your midwife to help you, ask your doctor or nurse if your breast feeding to do a clinical breast exam. Itโs extremely important for you to check your breasts at least every month, at home.
If youโre in menopause already, pick a day and stick to it, do this every single month. Stay in touch with your doctor, report anything abnormal.
The emotional, physical and financial burden of breast cancer can take a toll on you and your loved ones. Remember, early detection is key.
